She opened her eyes, and blinked a few times. She wasn't sure where, exactly she was, or how old she was. Hell, she wasn't even sure at this point if she was in the present, or trapped in a memory, or her imaginary world. She looked around, and decided that she was in the hospital. Then, everything that had happened started coming back into her memory. Taking the boys for a walk. Timmy getting hit by a car. Taken by ambulance to the hospital. Calling Jack, and riding to the hospital with him. The awful news that he was in bad shape, and then finding out he had died. She also remembered that she had zoned out, for two weeks, and missed his funeral.
Tears started flowing. She was so angry with herself for missing Timmy's funeral.
How could I allow myself to zone out and miss my son's funeral? What kind of Mom am I?
She was quiet, and could hear voices in the hall. She listened, and realized it was her doctor, and Jack. She got out of bed, and walked to the door, and heard they were making plans to have her sent to a psychiatric hospital.Oh, hell no! I spent time there once before, I will NOT go back. She decided she would play along with Jack and the doctors, get home, and then run away. She knew she never wanted to be in a psych hospital again. Not ever.
Jack opened the door and walked in. "You're awake. Good. They are going to be releasing you in a little bit. Your discharge paperwork is being put together now. You can go ahead and get dressed." Jack got her clothes out of the dresser for her, and then offered to help her get dressed, "No, thanks Jack, I think I can manage on my own. I'm going to get dressed in the bathroom, I need to use the restroom anyway." She grabbed her clothes. She walked into the bathroom with her clothes and then walked into the bathroom. When she came out of the bathroom, fully dressed, Jack was sitting in a chair, looking at his phone, and a nurse was just walking into the room."Liz, let me remove the IV, wires and other stuff so you can go home. Can you have a set, please?"
"Sure." She sat down on the end of the bed, and put her arm out for the nurse. The nurse quickly removed the IV, and put a cotton ball, and a band-aid, over the site where the IV had been.
"Ok, you're ready to go, we just needed you to sign/ this discharge paperwork, then you can go." She signed where the nurse indicated. The nurse then looked at Jack and said, "Mr. Lewis, I'll bring her down in the wheelchair. Why don't you go ahead and pull your car up to the hospital entrance?"
Jack agreed, and left the room, and headed to his car, and the nurse helped her get situated in the wheelchair. She grabbed the small bag the hospital gave her with her belongings in it, and put that in her lap, and then said, "Ok, I guess I'm ready." "Ok, let's go then" and the nurse pushed the wheelchair down the halls and outside, where Jack was waiting.
She looked at Jack, and smiled. She always enjoyed looking at her husband, and loved his handsome smile. It always made her feel special when he smiled at her. She got up, and got into the car. As they drove off, Jack put on the radio, and tuned it to her favorite classic rock station. Jack reached out and took her hand, smiled at her again, then drove home. They sat in silence, occasionally singing together when a favorite song came on the radio. When they got home, Jack parked the car on the driveway, and then hopped out and ran around the car to open the door for her.
She took Jack's outstretched hand, looked up at him and smiled. Jack pulled her out of the car, and into a hug. With Jack's arms wrapped around her, she looked up at the beautiful blue sky.She blinked her eyes, took in a deep breath of air and sighed out loud. When she blinked again, Jack was gone. His car was gone. She heard kids voices all around her. She blinked once again, and saw her twin boys, Timmy and Tyler running around on the driveway, playing tag. "Mommy, Mommy, are you ready for our walk?" She looked down at her boys, crouched down, and said, "Come here, sweethearts." The boys ran into her outstretched arms, and she scooped them both up into a giant bear hug. "Mommy!" Timmy said, "Let's go park. I want swing Tyler!" She giggled, set the boys down and said, "Ok, little Monkeys, get into the stroller and let's go." The boys hopped in, she strapped them in and she started pushing them down the street. She sighed deeply, knowing that everything was truly perfect, and exactly the way it was meant to be, her boys safe from harm, and the whole episode was a terrible round of Worst Case Scenario.
