"YOU'RE FAKE DATING A KOREAN IDOL!?"
My head jerks back in automatic response to my best friend's sudden exclamation. The silence and emptiness of the room does not help my sensitive ears, and my face scrunches up to express this.
I nod slowly, a bit hesitant to confirm her statement, which sounded too ridiculous when said out loud. I would have never guessed that sometime in my life I would experience something that sounded as if it was straight out of one of the romance novels I read. This realization made me feel uncomfortable and a bit irritated. Yes, I did dream of living a dramatic life that was like one of the heroines in a book or movie, but as I grew older, I knew that I would definitely rather live my life without any complications. Thinking back, I probably jinxed myself.
About an hour ago, I had just gotten home from school, exhausted, and was ready to take an afternoon nap. Although, I still needed to complete my school work, so I opened my laptop that sat on top of my desk. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the familiar ringing sound that suggested someone was trying to call me via Skype. My lips immediately curved into a smile, since I knew exactly who wanted to speak with me. 'Who else would call me?' I thought. I quickly used the laptop's touchpad to accept the call, before the ringing sound dissapeared. The Skype window enlarged on my computer screen instantly and showed two boxes. One of the boxes mirrored how I looked through the camera of the computer and the other revealed my best friend, Lucky. At the sight of her, my exhaustion seemed to disintegrate into the air around me, replaced by a sudden burst of energy. "LUCKYYY!" I squealed, while staring at her face through my computer screen. I had texted her almost everyday since I came to Korea, but I missed actually having a conversation with her and seeing her face.
"LYLY! How are you!?" Her grin was so radiant that it almost felt like we were talking in person. I scanned the Skype window and took in her long, sleek, black hair and glasses, as well as the familiar background of the white walls in her bedroom. Gosh, I missed her.
I sighed. Now that I was able to have a proper conversation with her, I knew that I should tell her about the one thing I had left out during our text sessions. I didn't like keeping secrets from her and knew that if I did, I couldn't stay silent for too long.
"I'm okay, it's just that I have something to tell you..." Those words are what started my long explanation of how I became Jihoon's secret girlfriend, completely unintentionally. Throughout my story, Lucky listened carefully from start to finish, taking in my current screwed up situation. I was grateful that she didn't interrupt me and let me spill the contents of my mind. Once I'm finished, Lucky takes a deep breath and her eyes widen, which I knew meant that she was about to freak out. "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE ACTUALLY DATING A KOREAN IDOL. NOT TO MENTION, ONE OF THE IDOLS YOUR SISTER LIKES. I'M DONE. I KNEW SOMETHING BAD WAS GONNA HAPPEN TO YOU KOREA! I CALLED IT AND NOW I'M COMPLETELY DONE."
I bury my face in hands, out of stress, "My situation isn't that bad, is it? It is only for a week and it's not my fault stupid Winkie had to take my attempt at a joke so seriously. This is why I don't make jokes. Nobody ever gets it." I throw my hands in the air, completely and utterly annoyed with my life. I always had this theory that fate LOVED to make fun of me.
"Well, maybe this Ji-who guy actually likes you and is just using this whole 'dating Lyra situation', as an excuse to be close to you?" Lucky suggests, raising a thick eyebrow.
I immediately make an 'X' shape with my arms, "Nope. That's definitely out of the question. A Korean idol, with so many fans that he could house them in a stadium, liking me? You're funny, Lucks." I lean on my bed frame, worn out from talking too much about Jihoon.
