I woke up the next morning on the sofa in Dyanna’s living room with my head faced down in the pillow across the room from her. She was already awake and watching TV. I sat up and yawned while stretching. Of course stretching put me in a lot of pain but I couldn’t show it.
“Good morning” I said giving a small smile over to Dyanna.
“Morn -woah! What happened to your eye! Oh my god, are you okay?”
I grabbed my phone quickly and used the screen as a mirror. The makeup had gone away while I was sleeping. You could clearly see my back eye. Dammit. Time to think of another excuse.
“I must have hit myself while I was sleeping with my rings or something. I’m okay.”
“Are you sure? That looks pretty bad.”
“Yeah, it’s nothing. I’m just going to go cover it up with some makeup so I don’t have lots of people questioning me.” She looked over at me as if she knew I was lying. “I’m fine. I promise.” I reassured her.
I wasn’t going to just tell her the truth. I couldn’t. If I did, she could end up getting hurt and so could anyone that she would decide to tell. I ran to the bathroom and took a look as to just how bad it was. It looked worse than anything he has done to me before. While I was looking in the mirror I noticed Dyanna standing behind me in the doorway.
“You know this isn’t the first time that you’ve had a black eye, or a bruise, or scratches.”
“What are you saying?”
“I don’t know. I guess I just want you to tell me what’s going on and what really happened to you.”
“I told you, it was nothing.”
“Kenzie, I know you. Please just tell me.”
“I can’t. Just trust me with this. I’ll be fine. I gotta go.”
I dodged around Dyanna and made my way out her door. I had nothing with me besides my phone since I never went home last night to get anything. I kept telling myself not to cry because I would ruin my makeup once again. But at this point I was wondering if I should finally tell someone about everything. I mean I do have proof, a lot of it. And I could show them all of my makeup that I’ve gone through because of it all. All of these thought crossed my mind on my way home. I passed by Riley’s house and just kind of stared. He’s the only one that knows about it and I don’t know whether that’s a good thing or not.
I stopped by a small store on the street I was walking on and bought a slurpee with the money that I had in my pockets. I just walked around with the slurpee trying to avoid going home as long as possible. Chances are Luke had talked to my parents about me not being there. I got to my house about an hour later and figured I could just relax there for the afternoon and have nothing to worry about for the time being. I walked into my house and heard my parents talking in the living room. I made my way half way up the stairs hoping they didn’t hear me come in before I heard them calling my name. Great. I turned around and walked back down the stairs and into the living room. I saw my parents sitting on the sofa smiling at me.
“What’s up…?” I asked slowly.
“You have a visitor.” My mom responded.
I looked over at the chair across the room and dropped my slurpee with the sight of him. Shit.
