Chapter 2: Day 1
The morning light filtering through the trees and the slight breeze flapping the tent door woke me.
The birds were happily chirping and calling to the early risers. I tried rolling over but something held me tight.
A pair of strong arms was wrapped around my waist. I tried turning again and the grip loosened slightly. I turned over, being careful not to wake my captor.
His face was peaceful and happy. I reached up and traced a finger along the side of his face, a small smile appearing on his lips.
I took my hand away and carefully wriggled out of his reach. Standing up I pulled on some blue knee length shorts, my new purple tank top and my hiking boots. Finding a hair-tie in my bag I pulled my hair into a ponytail pushing the loose strands that fell around my face back with my new red bandanna.
I crawled out of the tent, glancing around to see who else was up. So far Nate and Shani were the only two awake, they were sitting on a log surrounding the fire huddled up whispering things to each other. I strode over to the breakfast tub pulling out two bowls, the milk and the Nutri-grain, after waving to Nate and Shani I walked back to the tent. I saw Josh rolling up his sleeping bag; the tent was surprisingly cleaner than I had left it.
All the packs had been put to one side and zipped up; the only thing that was left was the sleeping bag that he had just finished rolling up. I offered a bowl of cereal to him and we ate in silence.
It was a funny site when we headed off on the first day of our journey; most people looked like they would prefer to still be wrapped up in their sleeping bags back in the tents. I grinned, they all looked so tired, you would have thought it was the end of the trip and not the first day.
"Okay, everyone, lets get going. We got everything? Nothing left behind?" I called.
"Nope it's all spick and span." Replied Bret.
"Koolios, let's go!" I yelled. Punching the air with my fist and laughing.
We headed forward to the start of the trail. It wasn't a very wide trail; tall wide brown trunks with their thick shady canopy left room for only one pair of feet at a time. Trekking onwards towards our destination with the path widening and narrowing, at one point we had to take off our packs and squeeze through the gap because the growth was so think there was no other way.
Little conversations sprouted here and there; we seemed to split up into little groups; I could see Nate up ahead, leading with Shani, Carrie and Bret following behind them. Rhys was in a heated conversation with Kay about the types of trees we passed a few minutes back, it sounded like Rhys was winning, he seemed to have more facts that left Kay wondering what to say next.
Ty was busy talking to Rose, gesturing around at the scenery, pointing things out every so often and guiding her around the litter of twigs and slippery patches on the ground.
"Those two should just admit it." Josh stated behind me, startling me; making me jump and trip over a stray rock.
"Jeeze!" I gasped.
"Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to startle you like that." He said, mumbling a sentence that sounded like "I didn't know the fairies came with us."
I smiled at his last remark, not letting him know I heard it, but acknowledging it all the same.
You see, Bret's always going on about how I'm always off with the fairies in class, or at lunch time and I never pay attention to what's around me.
I do actually, I just do it discreetly, and yes, sometimes people do catch me daydreaming, I'm just glad they haven't figured out what about.
"That's ok, I should have been paying more attention. I was just watching Ty and Rose, and thinking the same thing you said." I stated smiling still.
