Chapter 9: Ooo shiny

It was getting close to one thirty and we wanted to get to the campsite before dusk. I looped my arm through Rose's and tugged her up the path.

We didn't need words to describe what we were feeling, we didn't need to ask each other what it was like, we didn't even need to look at each other, because I knew that all the feelings swirling around me and the look on my face would be exactly the same as Rose's.

The pure bliss I felt was amazing, I never knew that one smile had such power. I turned to Rose as she sighed and spoke almost dreamlike.

"He has such an amazing smile El. I swear, if you took that one smile and turn it into electricity, it could power a whole city for a thousand years and more!"

I smiled at what she said. It reminded me of that song, 'You belong with me' by Taylor swift, and the part where she sings 'You've got a smile that could light up this whole town.' It was true though; the glow that seems to come from people when they smile like that is amazing.

I caught sight of something shiny off the trail. "Hey, I'm just going to check something out." I said to Rose.

She seemed distracted and mumbled something that sounded like a yeah, but I didn't quite hear it because I was already walking towards the shiny thing.

I crouched down to get a better look at it. I glanced behind me and back to the path. I was about 3 meters off track but Rose knew where I was so it was ok.

I turned back and picked up the shiny object. It was about the size of my hand and in the shape of a triangle.

One edge was small but the other two were long and sharp. It could come in handy as a knife when there weren't any left.

I searched around for a decent stick to put of the small end so I had something to hold it by.

It took me quite a while of shuffling around and searching before I found three that might be useful.

I tried each in turn and found that one fit perfectly, like it was made for this. I pushed it onto the end, and tried it out on a bit of bark on one of the nearby trees.

It cut perfectly, almost as good as the steak knives mum had at home.

I stood up walking back to where I was before. Looking around where I thought the path should have been there was nothing.

I changed my direction and looked again. Maybe I went the wrong way, I walked back to where I found the last stick and walked the same distance in the opposite direction. Still nothing. I was getting worried now. I tried again walking to where I thought North would be. I was lost.

There was no way I could deny it any longer. I was lost, and then realization hit me. I was lost... and no one knew.

Or at least they thought it would be funny to let me wander around watching me think I'm lost.

I called out again and again, yelling till my voice was hoarse, hoping, almost praying that this was just some silly prank and they'd come get me soon.

I sat down on a fallen log and waited. They couldn't do this to me. I was so scared; I needed someone. I needed Josh.

I wished he were here, telling me it was all fine, it was all just a dream, just a horrible dream.

Only a little while ago I had been walking along with my friends happy and oblivious of what would happen.

I felt my face get hot, and the trees around me became blurry to the point that they were just smudges of colour in front of me.
