(Ryder's POV)
As soon as I walked into the door, I knew something was up. All the lights were off, and the dog was outside. I decided to go and find my uncle, so I could get my chore list. I walked up the stairs and went to his bedroom door, and knocked. No one answered. I opened the door, and scanned the room. He wasn't there. As I was walking out, I saw a piece of paper with my name on it on his dresser. I picked up the paper. It was folded. Once unfolded, I read it.
Dear Ryder,
I'm going to be at work longer than usual. You know what you have to do
-Uncle Charles
P.S. Also give the dog a bath.
Give the dog a bath, really? He must want the dog to kill me! I thought.
As soon as I finished the last of the housework, I could hear the door being unlocked. The door opened and Charles walked in. He set his things down, and looked over at me. After staring me in the eyes with his cold, green eyes for a few seconds, he scanned the house.
"Looks good," he complemented.
I didn't say a word.
"Aren't you gonna thank me?" he asked, giving me an evil look.
Still nothin'.
He walked over to me and pushed me against the living room wall.
"Now thank me, before I kick your ass for being rude!"
I gulped, but didn't say a word; knowing he was drunk makes me scared to say something even when he tells me. The smell of alcohol made me sick and caused me to get dizzy.
"Last chance," he warned.
After more silence, Charles kicks me in the stomach and punches me in the face.
**********The Next Morning**********
I wake up the next morning, and feel extremely achy. I had another beating after he found out that I didn't wash the dog. After getting out of bed and getting dressed, I walk into the bathroom. Once I get brushing my hair and teeth out of the way, I look at the damage. My left cheek is bruised and I have a black eye. That's not counting the dozens of cuts and bruises on my arms and legs. I cover up what I can, and finish getting my things ready for school.
As I'm locking the front-door, I feel like someone's watching me. I look around, but I don't see anyone. I shrug. Boy, was that a bad idea. I wince in the pain. Then, continue my walk to school. Once I get down the street a bit, a hand touches my shoulder, and scares me. I turn to see a very happy and handsome Hunter.
"Mornin', Ryder," he greets me with a huge smile. "Did I scare you?"
Can he stop smiling! It's driving me crazy! In a good way.
"Yeah, kinda," I reply.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to," Hunter says apologetically, turning his smile into a frown.
"It's okay, you didn't mean to. And it didn't bother me," I assure him.
We continue to walk to school, chatting about stuff.
**********After Math and P.E.**********
After P.E., me and Hunter were walking to our next class.
"I'll be right back, I need to grab something," Hunter said.
"Alright, I'll be right here," I say, and stay in the middle on the hallway.
