"I'm so glad school's over," Alice told me as we were walking to the shopping mall. We just got out of school and we decided to buy new summer clothes.
"I know. Now we can focus on music more," I responded.
"Of course, speaking of, we need to find a new song to cover. Something a bit more jazzy than That'll Be The Day," she laughed.
"Well, let's stop at the record store on our way home."
We got to the mall and the first thing I saw was a shirt with a psychedelic print on it. I walked over to it and looked at the price. Not bad.
"You're not going to buy that, are you?" Alice asked.
"Oh--uh, of course not." I forgot, I don't dress like that anymore. I've been dressing like these, "averages" or whatever you call them, for nearly two months now.
"Good. Now come on," she pulled me over to the section with the "cool clothes".
"Try this on," she told me, holding up a shirt with Buddy Holly on it.
I took it from her and went to the changing rooms. The size was small, but it was still very large on me. Probably because I'm so skinny. And that would be a result of my vegetarian diet. I didn''t mind it, really. I usually wore large clothes, even most of my hippie clothes don't fit me.
"How does it look?" Alice called from outside the door.
I opened the door. "Large," I laughed.
"It looks good. We'll just have to get you a leather vest to wear over it."
I took the shirt off and put my other shirt back on. I acctually like the Buddy Holly shirt, I am a big fan of his. We found a vest and I also got black shorts to wear with it. Alice got short demin shorts and a grey shirt with skull on it. We payed for all of it and went to the record store.
"How about this?" I asked, holding up The Ultimate Bobby Darin.
"You must really like him," she laughed as she looked at it.
"Well, of course."
"This seems good. Go pay for it, I'll be right there."
I took the record and payed for it at the register. Alice came over just as I handed the money to the man and we started walking back home. "Maybe you all can come to my house this weekend and we can pick a song to cover," I suggested.
"Alright, how's Saturday?"
"Saturday's fine."
We were quiet to a few minutes. "You know, you're whole "rocker" look doesn't really match the jazzy music of the band," I said.
"I know, but if we dressed to match the music, we would look like old people playing bingo."
I had to laugh at that. She was right, and I never thought about that. We continued walking until we got to her house. She said "Bye" and went inside. I continued to walk until I got to my street, and I stopped and looked ahead at the unusually crowded street. I didn't give it much thought, and I continued my walk to my house. I went inside and walked into the living room and sat next to Paul.
"Hello, love," he said.
"Hi Paul," I said emotionlessly.
"Is something wrong?"
"Nope. Not a thing." I said in the same tone.
"Remember when I said I can tell when you're lying?"
I sighed. "I hate dressing and acting like this, Paul! I hate being like everyone else, especially since I can't stand any of them! I want to be a hippie again!"
