Clarence sighed as she looked at the mirror. She wore black skinny jeans and a black tank top with her hair in a messy bun. She looked like a classic mess, yet she couldn't find herself to be mad at herself. The scars on her arm were less noticeable as they faded with the help of some scar cream. Her fingers traced the harshest scar that never seemed to fade.
"Come here, Clarence." She could smell the alcohol on his breath from the door.
"What's wrong, d-dad?" She stuttered in fear.
"I said come here!" He screamed. She slowly made her way to the living room where he waited for her, "The school called."
She waited.
"You are just like your mother." He hissed as he broke the bottle in his hand. He dug it into her arm as she cried out in pain. She begged for him to stop, yet he just laughed.Clarence sighed as she put on the matching flannel shirt to cover all her scars. Even though they were mostly faded, she still liked to hide them. She felt herself nurse a headache as she sat on her beaten couch.
A stern knock was heard at her door. It was loud and demanded attention.
"Who is it?" Clarence called as she made her way to the door. She winced at her own voice.
"Santa Clause." A voice that Clarence was beginning to know too well called.
"Did you bring me cookies?" She asked as she opened the door to see Austin rolling his eyes. She kept a smile on even though it hurt to hear any sound.
"It's supposed to be the other way around. You are going on the bad list." He smirked as Clarence shook her head.
"Darn, I really wanted that pony." Clarence pretended to be sad before opening the door to him. "Do you always show up this early, or am I that lucky?"
"You are just that lucky I assume." He laughed gently as he walked into her apartment. His eyes traced the room over, and he shook his head in slight disgust.
"What are you doing here? This neighborhood doesn't seem like your kind of place." Clarence asked as she sat on her couch.
"I wanted to see you even if you live in... a different setting than me." His eyes traced the stains on the rug.
"My theory is someone was murdered, or didn't make it to the bedroom." She nodded to the stain that she could never get out.
"Maybe both." He winced as he reluctantly took a seat next to her.
"I wouldn't be surprised." Clarence spoke as she twisted the ring that she wore on her left hand.
"Do you have a fiance?" Austin spoke coolly as he looked at her hand.
"No, a boyfriend. He is back home while I take care of family business." She looked at the purple stone in the middle.
"How long ago was that?" He asked as he took her hand with the ring to examine it.
"Six months ago." Her voice was small as he started smiling.
"He can handle having someone so gorgeous stay away for that long?" Austin asked with amusement laced into his words.
"We manage. I've been with him so long that being by myself is... nice." Clarence looked at the ring again, "Does that make me a bad person?"
"I don't think you have the capability to be a bad person, Rosy." He smiled as he let go of her hand.
"You've only known me for a day, Austin. I could be a serial killer." Clarence tried to give him a terrifying face, but he just laughed.
"Something about you makes me think I've known you forever." Austin spoke softly as he moved a piece of hair behind her hair.
"I guess I have one of those faces." She could barely get the words out as her breath was caught in her throat.
"I don't think that is it." His fingers brushed against her cheek before he moved it away.
"Maybe one day it will come to you." Clarence spoke as her breath finally came back to her. As Austin was about to speak his phone started ringing.
"I think I should be leaving." Austin walked to the door quickly, "I will be seeing you at seven."
"Austin, w-" He slammed the door shut as he walked out, "-ait."
"That went fantastic." Clarence mumbled before burying her head in her hands nursing her growing headache. She sighed as she made her way to her pill bottles looking for pain relief.
