Night has come to this rain-forest or jungle whatever you may wish to call it. Eerie sounds of frogs chirping at night and crickets humming. All insects hide in underground burrows or blend with tree bark. Monkeys keep from the ground in the blackness because they know this is my hour. Black as night and faded spots I move through the jungle nothing visible but my big yellow eyes gazing in the darkness. A shadow catches my eye. It's a wild boar, and an easy meal. Easiest one since the last three weeks I had barely caught a thing except a rabbit which is hardly fulfilling. I had to get better at hunting so that soon I would be strong enough to stand my ground against other males and earn my right to a female during the mating season. I crouched down making sure to judge the distance carefully. The boar turns it back and I pounce. Mission accomplished. I had food that would last for quite awhile. I would eat what I wanted to now and take back the rest to my cave.

I am the eyes of the night, the roar you hear shake the earth when dangers greater than me are near. I look out for the jungle for it's my kingdom. You call me the black jaguar or a black leopard, or a black panther. I pick up my meal and drag it back to my cave. I however am not the only predator awake. Hyenas laugh at the moon in the dark reckless young'uns not caring who they disturb.
"Who, who, who who,"
An owl hoots from above in its hollow. Deer graze quietly on the few remaining things left. Winter for all of us has been tough. I shake my head at the fact that her little fawns would even like the taste of bark. But I am not a deer. But I can't say insects are appetizing either. Bears are my friends. They help keep the ecosystem running properly. My mother named me Malachite for I was born under the light of the constellation itself. That was three years ago and I miss her deeply as I do my sister whose eyes were green as emeralds sparkling against a dark cave opening.
