I pace back and forth in front of the human as I try to stay calm. "I told you to stay close," I snap and look over to her. She sighs and walks over and sits on the bench in front of my bed. I glare at her and her lack of fear. You should be scared. I could tear you apart piece by piece in a matter of seconds. Why aren't you afraid?
"I'm obviously fine, though, so I don't see why it's such a big deal," she challenges, crossing her arms.
"You could have gotten killed," I say and she rolls her eyes.
"The other vampires don't seem too bad," she says, though I can see the doubt she has in her eyes.
"They've done nothing but look at you like their next meal," I snap and she puts her head in her hands.
"Can we not do this, please?" She begs. "I'm tired."
I roll my eyes and move to sit next to her. "Just be more careful, okay?"
"I saw Weston again," she says into her hands and I freeze.
"What?"
She sits up and stares forward and I can hear her heart beat increase. "They're keeping him locked up in this..."
"I know where," I say, looking away from her. "They held Kanin there." Images of the Master vampire chained to the wall flashes through my mine, the way he grabbed my blood sister and nearly killed her. "Why were you down there?"
"I didn't mean to," she says. "I was told all the way downstairs so that's where I went."
"Was it bad?"
She takes a deep breath. "His entire chest is... Covered. Is that what you looked like?" I nod as a dull pain slowly throbs in my shoulder, a constant reminder that I almost didn't make it.
"He told me about Kanin," Abigail says after a few minutes of silence. I freeze and look straight ahead. Weston couldn't have possibly told her... Did he?
"What about him?"
"That he created the Red Lung."
Dammit. "He's right." I hear her let out a long breath and she leans forward.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
I shrug and look down. "There's a lot you don't know."
"Then tell me," she challenges, turning to me. "Tell me everything. If you hated Kanin so much, why did you go on a rescue mission with your sister to save him? Why did you help him find a cure? And why did you save Eden?"
I whirl on her, placing a hand over her mouth, my fangs involuntarily slipping out. "Do not speak of that town here," I whisper. "It is important to keep them safe. If word got out where the cure was, they would surely go after it. We cannot risk that."
She nods in understanding and moves my hand from her mouth. "So I'm guessing you're not telling me anything?"
I sigh for no reason and lean back. "Not here. You never know who is listening."
"Jackal," she starts. "Why are we here?"
I shrug and chuckle. "I'm not entirely sure. I mostly wanted to see if New Covington was still standing after Sarren released the new disease. Surprisingly it is. But if Allison and Ezkiel don't start moving soon I'm afraid it might not be for long."
"What do you mean?" She asks, but then realization crosses over her eyes. "Weston wasn't the only one, was he?"
I shake my head. "I'm afraid not. I can see it in their eyes. They're tainted."
