I awake the next evening and push myself out of my grave. My front is covered in blood from this morning, the fabric of my clothes torn from the bullets that had pierced my body. My head hurts and I feel the Monster begging for more. Oh, stop it, I snap at it. We aren't even hungry. You're just still pissed about the humans. I can almost feel the Monster growl in protest and I shake my head and look around me. Neither human is to be found and a wave of panic takes over me as I begin searching for them.
"Does he usually take this long to wake up?" I hear the Pet say and I sigh in relief, but it's instantly replaced with annoyance.
"As I've already said, Parker, the sun just set. I'm sure he'll be joining us soon," Abby's voices rises behind the trees and I follow it.
"I just don't want us to be here any longer than need be. Because of my betrayal to Salazar, I wouldn't be surprised if he sends others after us," the Pet says.
I roll my eyes as I enter their little campground. "Salazar probably hasn't even realized you left," I say and I look down at the two. "However, I'm sure he cares that I'm gone, so I suggest we get moving."
Abigail gives me a small smile and I meet her look. There's a fear behind her eyes that wasn't there before. Did I put that fear there? I am reminded of this morning and how I had lost control. Shaking my head, I turn and begin walking.
"Rules are simple," I start, not turning to look behind me. "You keep up with me or you get left behind. Do not think for a moment that I will wait for you because I certainly will not. Breaks are far and few in between and I will not help you search for food; that is something to do on your own time. If we are attacked by rabids, I will save myself before I save you." I stop and turn to face the Pet. "Understood?"
He nods and gives Abby a look. "Is he always like this?"
She laughs and hides her smile behind her hand. "I'm afraid so."
I roll my eyes and continue walking. "And one last rule," I say, closing my eyes knowing that this one won't be followed. "Keep talking to a minimum."

"It's a shame, really, that Stick died," the Pet is saying. Not even ten minutes after we started walking, he immediately went into the story about his life and has barely stopped to take a breath. "I heard he had quite the life outside the City."
"Oh, yes," I mock. "Quite the fellow. He was a coward who turned on his own best friend, and then begged for her help in his final moments. Pity, really."
"Jackal," Abigail says and I smile.
"What?"
"Stop being an ass."
I laugh and smirk at the human girl. "Never."
She rolls her eyes and turns back to the Pet. "So how did you get to be in your position?"
He shrugs. "Not really sure what I did. Was just a boy living with my parents in the city when all of a sudden came a knock at the door. They took my parents first and then came back for me a couple days later."
Abby looks at him with worry. "What happened to your parents?"
"Dead, obviously," I say, annoyed. "Now, be quiet. There's rabids in the area and I don't want to attract any unwanted attention." I'm also tired of you being so interested in the other humans life story. I roll my eyes at the jealous thought, but keep walking, the two humans slowly making their way behind me.
"Jackal," Abby whispers, running up to me. "Can we stop for a few minutes?"
"No," I say a little too harshly, but she stops anyways.
