David had given us a task for the day. It wasn't the best, but it was something to do in this place. The bad part was, we had to go through the area on a scavenger hunt. The whole trope made me wonder if he was just quietly making up reasons for us to get out of camp so we don't drive him bonkers. I don't blame him, the trouble trio has done enough damage for the first month to last all year.

David called us out to the activity area, his cheery voice blasting on the speakers announcing the activity. I got up and got my clothes on, making sure everything looked decent. If my mom were here, she'd make sure I looked nice. I put on the regular short sleeved shirt, shorts, and sneakers.

I wasn't really the kind of kid who would cause trouble. I considered it many times, I just was never brave enough for it. I'm known as the good kid of the class, the sweetheart for my parents, the well behaved kid. You get it, right? Anyways, I didn't like the idea that I had to be paired up with someone. Luckily, there's an odd number of kids at camp, so I might have a swing at being alone.

David had us gathered up, explaining what we have to do. It was when he said that we could pick our partners that I listened. "Only if they're not someone we talk to alot. We need to be able to socialize out of our comfort zone sometimes!" He said. The pairs were odd, I'll admit. Everyone was with someone that they don't talk to, let alone are ever seen with.

I noticed two things. One, I forgot that one of the campers left because their parents found a better camp that wasn't shit. Two, two campers weren't trying to find a partner. Who are those campers you may ask? Max and I. Apparently, he didn't expect David to expect him to participate. I was only wanting to be alone. Unfortunately, things ended out the way they did.

I heard Max groan. "I'm supposed to be partners with this goody two shoes?" I glared at him, "excuse you, I almost broke a kid's arm off." I said in my most threatening tone. He just walked towards me, not taking his hands out of his pockets and keeping his mixture of unamused and pissed off expression.

He towered over me, taking advantage of the fact he's a head taller than me.
(D o n ' t) I immediately backed up as he smirked, "I call bullshit. If you're scared of me, I don't believe in a million years you could break a kid's arm." I looked down and began messing with my hair. "I mean... I didn't get any medical information" I mumbled, making Max laugh. "Wow!"

I felt my hand ball up into a fist, but I took a deep breath and let my arm relax. I stood up, and walked to the woods to find our first clue. I wouldn't notice otherwise, but Max's shadow following me on the ground told me he was unwillingly following me.

I picked up our clue, a pinecone. I inspected it, turning it around in my hand looking for a written note. It would be likely that it was from the woods, and I'm a dumbass, but the thing is... we weren't near the wooded area of the camp. We were in the center of the activity area. So that was something.

I heard Max walking towards the woods, "hey! Where are you going?" He glared at me before scoffing, "away from here." I looked at him confused. He stomped over to me, "listen, I'm not going to stick around for the end of summer. And I doubt you fucking want to either. So either you follow me so David doesn't get suspicious and scold your ass, or you stay here and suffer."

I'll admit,  he seemed red. I felt like staying, but my feet shuffled over to follow Max, who was already on his way to the woods. He went into a dim lit area, with tree branches that would cave over and scratch anyone who would pass them. Max would push the branches up, and hold them for me. I would just nod to him, not saying anything the whole time.

After what seemed like an hour, we reached a wall of hedge. (Yep. I've gone stereotypical) He pushed through, revealing a place that seemed like heaven. I gasped, "am I dead? It seems like I'm dead. Did you kill me?" I sputtered out, looking around. I saw Max out of the corner of my eye, taking glances at me every now and then.

When I saw him begin to stare at me, I looked at him. "This is beautiful!" I was beaming, and for the first time, I saw him smiling. "Well the Quartermaster showed it to me and I thought it was cool and all..." he began looking away, scratching his neck. I then thought for a moment, "why are you showing me?" I asked.

His face went a dark shade of red as he looked away again, "n-no reason." I felt my face heating up, then shaking off the thought. He would never think that way about me... would he? I looked back at the landscape of the area. I felt a tap on my shoulder, turning around to see Max holding a flower out to me. I felt my face grow warm again, taking it and hugging Max.

"Whatever..." he grumbled. I put the flower in my hair and grasped his hand. He led me back to camp, and out of the glowing area. Apparently, we were still holding hands when we came back, and someone had won the game, because I heard Nikki yell, "look at Max and (y/n)!" As an outburst of laughter had erupt from the camp and David ran out to gush.

Max and I looked at eachother before shrugging, and I placed a kiss right on his cheek!
