"It's all your fault! I should never have trusted someone like you to actually help me! Hell, you had probably set this up with them!"
"No...No, I didn't! I haven't!" I rose onto my knees, hands gripping his pants until he knocked me off.
"Then you won't mind doing something for this pack."
I looked up at him as he crossed his arms, staring down at me as though I was some kind of gross stain on the carpet. I would have rather been that, than the reason that someone I had respected and depended on so much was... Murdered, because of what I had done, "What," I swallowed, trying to talk through a strained throat, "What needs to be done?"
David turned away, shaking with the effort of trying to control his anger, which had always been a problem. Minutes ticked by until he was able to breathe more calmly. His back still turned, David dropped the biggest surprise since his father's death, "I need you to join the Seneschal.""It's all your fault! David turned away, shaking with the effort of trying to control his anger, which had always been a problem. Minutes ticked by until he was able to breathe more calmly. His back still turned, David dropped the biggest surprise since his father's death, "I need you to join the Seneschal."
"I-I, David... They- I wouldn't be able to stay as part of the pack," My mind was numb; it was all too much for me to take in. I had so much here, so much... "David, my life is here, my family's lives were-are here." I reached out to him, on my knees. He should know I only have my sister left.
"David-David," I edged closer, hand reaching for his pants once more, only for him to look down at me over his shoulder and sneer. I drew my hand back, clutching at my own jeans. "My sister, David. She will be on her own here-"
"Take her with you then, because you either do this, or," His eyes sharpened at me, a horrible grin covering his face.
He didn't complete the sentence, "She needs to be around others of her kind to even have a chance. It'll still be years before she's out of danger and, without me, she will have no one."
"I don't think you understand, you either join and I let you be a neutral entity in our territory with your sister who we will still care for or I have you executed for the indirect cause of my father's death... Then, who knows what could happen to your sister? Hm? And no one else would take you and your sister; she'd probably die before you can join another pack."
"David, why are you doing this to me?" I looked down at my hands fisted on my jeans, watching as the tears splat onto them. "All I've ever done is try to help you, even against my better judgement, as my alpha..."
"Ha! And yet your 'help' caused my father his life, and now I'm Alpha and in charge of this pack and soon I'll have to follow the damn contract we signed," He growled, trembling as he tried to reverse the partial shift from stress.
The contract you signed, David. Not me. I rubbed my faces harshly, dashing away the tears and standing up, "So, I join the Seneschal and you will allow me neutrality and keep my sister protected- I'll keep paying for the medications for her."
"Close. Even while you're with the Seneschal, I want whatever dirt you can get, and try to have them not use our pack much," I've always been disappointed in David and his immaturity and stupidity. The only reason I followed and put up with his shit was because he was my alpha and I had a stupid crush on him despite everything.
"I'm not going to join without a hard copy of our agreement," There was no way I was joining only to have David take back his part of any deal we had. I know him; he would do something that low.
"You mean another contract?!" David pushed me, and I let him, making it seem I got knocked harder than he could ever hope to do. If I had wanted to, I could have kicked his ass, but my sister's life was on the line, so I had a role to play.
I whimpered, having gotten 'knocked' into the side table next to one of the leather couches in the room, "David, please. It's my sister's life. I have to be sure she's safe."
"I can't believe I almost made the mistake of having you as my beta," He stomped over to his desk, straightening the chair before starting to type on the computer. He looked at me after a minute before pointing at one of the chairs. "Sit."
I hope to someday make him regret treating me like so much crap. I may be a wolf, but I sure as hell am not a 'dog'. But I played the part, putting my shoulders up and dejectedly sitting in the chair.
He continued typing for several more minutes before turning the monitor around for me to see, "There, how's that."
I read through the contract, finding it utterly ridiculous. It only had what he wanted and nothing about my sister. He had also typed up unrealistic and downright impossible items that I had to do with no incentive whatsoever, "May I have the keyboard, please?"
He glared at me, so I whined, "David, you don't even have my sister in here."
He glared at me, and I knew he had done that on purpose before shoving it over to me. Is he kidding me? Seriously, I wrote up the last contract- much better than any one he could have made. And I've learned from my mistakes. I made sure to word everything carefully and have specific time limits and so on, lengthening the sentences and making it seem as if it's still in his favor, when it definitely was not. He wanted me to spy and give him information on them; I simply changed it to, 'delivering information as is deemed safe to the second party.' I turned it back to him, and he read through it, pointing out a couple items and questioning me. I innocently answered back, him not knowing that the wording is very important, as the perspective it is read in can negate or validate.
Finally, he printed out the updated forms and we each signed them. His went into his safe; mine to be placed somewhere far better, "Now get the fuck out of my office, mutt."
I did my best to continue my kicked puppy act, when all I wanted to do was claw him up and yell that he was the alpha and the true one to blame for these events. He shouldn't push the blame onto others, especially those that had such high loyalty to him. Now, now shit was going to suck for him. Whether I do something or not, I knew that eventually, his choices will be his undoing. In the meantime, his life will become just a bit harder. I'll make sure of it.
So, this is a little teaser opener for the 2nd book of the series! Yes, this is the first part, but I was planning to do it in another week or so.
Happy Easter!
