It was a waiting game from here on out. Cam would pace the floors, his body having grown pale with fear as he worried about my well being. Sometimes, I would find him late at night curled up on his side in tears, his body shaking as he went through a nightmare I could never fully help him with.
Now, we lay curled up in front of the fire, his fingers dancing absentmindedly along the curve of my back as I drew my finger slowly over the wooden indents on the floor. Fluttering my eyes closed, I felt him slip his hand under my shirt, and the contrast of his cold body against my flaming one caused me to shiver. His face pressed into the curve between my shoulder and neck, the wet slips of tears dripping down from his face and across my neck like a deep cut I could never fix.
He turned my body facing his, and I laced my fingers into his hair, drawing my thumb underneath his eyes as my own became full of tears. “Everything will be okay,” I whispered to him, though not truly trusting my words.
He glanced up at me, his eyelashes sticking together. A small smile played on my lips and I kissed him, tasting the fear that was etched into his lips, tasting the desire that played on the edge, and tasting the love that I could never get tired of.
Before I knew it, I was wrapped up in his arms, his lips capturing mine as his fingers danced along my back, sending me on a dance on the clouds.
The pounding on the door had me stirring, and I slipped out of the bed with a soft groan, tugging the blanket around my body as Cam turned his shower off.
I stretched my body, my hair a tangled mess that lay settled on my shoulder.
My feet padded against the wood quietly and I yawned, stretching out my body as I wrapped my hand around the knob after unlocking the door.
When I tugged the door open, the smell that slipped in overwhelmed me and I gasped, the pounding from my heart reaching my ears. Without glancing up, I knew who it was. The sparks that began to spread through my arms towards the rest of my body had me jerking in and out of reality and the passion as Sam held me close.
“Oh, Star,” he whispered softly, hiding his face in my neck. “I’ve missed you.”
I whimpered softly, wiggling a bit to slip out of his grip and into the arms of Cam. Flicking my eyes upward, I saw the hard edge he had towards Sam, the tick in his jaw that let me know he was angered.
“Cam, this is Sam. Sam, this is Cam,” I muttered, twisting to press my face into Cam’s side as his arm wrapped around my waist, his fingers pressing gently into my skin.
“The man that keeps calling me,” he muttered out in a blunt tone, his muscles tensing before he pulled me away when Sam reached towards me. “Watch yourself, man. She’s my girlfriend. Wolf or not, I won’t hesitate to harm you.”
I poked Cam in the side roughly, giving a giggle when he growled at me in a playful tone. “She’s mine,” Sam growled back, grabbing my arm roughly to where I knew a bruise would bloom.
“Mate or not, I’ve had her from the beginning. You want to know why she came back to me after being forced to leave? It’s because she cares for me, she loves me, and I’d rather be dead than give her up.”
“I can make that happen.”
In one swift move, Sam had shifted, and he was the large wolf that stood before us. I growled softly at first, maneuvering my body in front of Cam’s as I pushed him back and shifted myself, my bristling white fur sticking on ends as I lowered myself to an attacking position and pinned my ears back.
