Chapter Six

Sitting upright, I clawed at my chest, feeling the rough movements under my fingers as I took deep breaths that were slowly causing my chest to ache bit by bit.  The feeling of the pain soon disappeared, and I was left staring into the darkness with Cam’s sleeping figure at my side.  Turning my head, I brushed the strands of hair from his face then slid out of bed, tugging the shirt down that was slowly riding up.

The wood beneath my feet was cool and warm all at the same time, causing me to shiver before I stood, hearing the dampness of my feet stick to it and create a soft sound as I walked towards the bathroom that sat glowing with a gentle golden hue.

Tugging my hair into a ponytail that would rest on my neck, I pushed the door open slowly and stepped inside, quickly shutting it behind me.  My fingers drummed against the counter as I walked in further and then stopped in front of the mirror, taking slow breaths before I flicked my eyes upward to glance at my reflection in the mirror, tugging at the strands of blond that was spiking my irritation bit by bit before I let it go, sighing.

Tracing the delicate carvings on the counter, I listened to the bedroom, hearing Cam stir, then give a soft groan.  My ear twitched, and I gave a smile, flicking off the light and pulling the door open to see him sitting up and rubbing his eyes, his lamp turned on and casting a glow over his features that made him look older than he was.

I felt my lips tilt up in a smile and he turned towards me, his eyes warm and soft from sleep before he smiled and held out his hand.  In three long strides, I placed my hand in his, feeling the rough texture under my fingertips, yet the underlying softness they held.  He pulled me into the bed, my knees sinking into the bedspread that was creating indents along my bare legs.  His hand, brushing over my leg, was warm against the chill of my body and I watched him smirk, his other hand slipping up to rest on my cheek, his fingers absentmindedly toying with the tips of my bangs.

“You’re a much brunette, sweetheart,” he whispered out, brushing his hand over my forehead slowly then frowned.  I brushed my thumb over the creases, watching them soften and fully expose his blue eyes.

“Everything okay?” I murmured back, placing my other hand over his and laced our fingers together.  The sparks that didn’t come never upset me, it only caused me to smile and realize that maybe everything wasn’t meant to fall into place.

            “You’re getting a fever.”

Blinking slowly, I began to laugh, slowly and soft at first until I couldn’t control them as tears pricked the corners of my eyes and fell down my cheeks slowly.  Cam’s features furrowed into confusion and then he pinned me down, leaning over my body without putting his weight on me.

I blinked, my lips parting slowly as I took slow breaths, watching him under my bangs as he leaned close and kissed me, causing my heart to flutter rapidly, my fingers to move up and tangle in his hair, and his own to rest on my waist.

“Tell me,” he spoke softly between the kisses he placed on my face. “Did you love the man you ran from?”

My thoughts drifted to Sam as I closed my eyes and leaned into him, feeling his lips brush over my forehead.  I could remember easily the way his hair fell over his eyes and curved, the dimple that would appear when he smiled, the golden hue of his eyes that captured me so.  Yet just as Sam appeared, he was gone and I was looking at Garrett, the way his body loomed over mine, the way he’d kiss me with so much passion that it would make me cry.
