Chapter Eight

Cam’s Point of View

Leaving her to rest, I pushed myself up, hearing the multiple pops in my bones that left me giving a soft groan of pain.  Star stirred in her sleep, the hospital blanket pulled up to her chin as she lay curled in a ball.  Brushing her hair out of her eyes, I let my fingertips linger on her cheek, watching the way she stirred a bit before falling back to sleep.  A sigh passed my lips, a lingering pain riddled in my chest as I bit back the want to walk out of the door and rip the man’s throat out with all of my being.

Shuffling over to the window, I tried to quietly tug the chair over, my fingertips sinking into the cool leather and began to slowly warm up.  Settling myself in the chair, I closed my eyes, feeling the Air Conditioner hit my body and then passing around me.

The past of this happening before came barreling through, and I gripped at my chest, feeling the pain etch its way into it.

            Don’t let them get me…

Flicking my eyes towards Star, I watched her breathing settle, her chest rising and falling in a slow movement that had me wanting to curl up beside her.  The covers lay tangled around her, her hands gripping it tightly and I knew she must be having a nightmare.

            They won’t touch you.

Rubbing my hands over my face tiredly, I felt the gnawing sensation to punch something seep in, the desire to hit the bag once again present as I looked at my hands, brushing my fingertips over the rough skin.  Had it always been this way?

            We’re losing him…  Cam, we’re losing the baby…

My phone began to vibrate in my pocket and I pulled it out tiredly, looking at the Caller ID before sliding up the answer button, watching the clock begin to tick.

“Cameron here.” I murmured, my voice sounding thick with sleep.

We’re not going to lose him!  Focus on me, breathe, sweetheart.

“Cam, hey, it’s Elijah.  Are you busy?”

I looked over at Star who now was facing my direction, her body curled up protectively around her stomach where the child no longer was.  I closed my eyes, remembering the way she’d smile when she found out, her fingers gripping mine tightly as the smile played on her face.

            “No, what’s up?”

Don’t touch me!  Cam, don’t let them take my baby…

“There was a call saying you had a child.  Wanted you to explain this to us because the team needs you, and we aren’t sure who else to call.  They all tend to fail within the next thirty minutes.”

I flicked my eyes towards Star and stood up, pushing the chair back under the TV before stepping out of the room and heading to the receptionist’s desk. “Let me see what I can do.  I’ll call you back in about five minutes.”

Hanging up, I placed my phone into my back pocket and then gave a grin to the woman. “May I help you?” she asked with a smile, her fingers no longer tapping against the keyboard.
