CHAPTER 8: WEIRD HEART OF FROG DIET

ANASTASIA

"Hi Ana"

I turn around in shock to meet Abigail's cold eyes, why is she at my locker? Why is she talking to me?

"H-hi" I stutter in response.

She smiles, but it's not a nice or welcoming smile, it's pleasure that I'm squirming so bad.

"I just wanted to say hi, really" she shrugs, adjusting the strap of her no doubt expensive purse. Everyone else carries a backpack or satchel. Not Abigail Merriwether.

"Ana"

I jolt backwards to face Jack and I feel myself panic, can this get any worse?

"Hey Jack" Abigail's voice is several octaves higher and way flirtier as her eyes greedily eye him like he's the last slice of pie, not that she eats pie, she's probably on some weird heart of frog diet.

He shoots her a barely there smile before turning back to me, giving me a proper smile that instinctively pulls one out of me in return.

"Ashley if you don't
mind I'd like to talk to Ana" he did not just call her by the wrong name. Is he trying to get me killed?

"It's Abigail " she grunts out and I swear her pupils dilate in anger.

"oops" he shrugs before grabbing my hand shocking me and Abigail.

She purses her lips and fakes a smile, "I'll see you in gym class,  bye" her words are full of promise and my heart drops to my feet.

She walks away quickly and I turn to Jack, an incredulous expression on my face.

He shrugs,  "you told me not to talk to her"

I make a fist and hit his chest with my free hand.

"And messing up her name is any better?  I know you know her name Jack!"

He raises his hands in surrender,  letting go of mine,  "okay, I'm sorry" there's a mischievous smirk on his face, I can't help but love.

I roll my eyes just as the bell rings "let's go to class" he says and grabs my hand again causing a jolt of happiness to go through me.

What happened to letting it all go?

***

I hate gym class.

Our entire grade is divided into two halves for gym class and I happen to be in the half that has Abigail and Jack in it.

I'm usually ignored and picked last for activities, not that I mind,  but now that I'm almost positive that Abigail hates me, I'm sure today's class is ending badly.

I change quietly in the locker room, quick enough to be out before Abigail and her friends can enter and start making noise and harrasing people like me.

When I'm dressed in the school's tracksuit -thankfully, we aren't forced to wear shorts and tank tops, those are so uncomfortable-I make my way to the large gym, hugging the wall.

Until Jack spots me and yells my name out loud.

I freeze as my name echos round the gym and I wait for all eyes to turn to me so I can melt into the floor.

Thankfully though Hannah Roch is in this class and she answers from the back,  "yes?"

Jack, having realised his idiocy, shakes his head, "sorry, wrong Ana"
