CHAPTER 13: AND JEREMY COULD DIE

ANASTASIA

I pick myself off the floor and brush myself off, "Jack" I call him.

He turns to me and I fail to hide my fear when I see how dark his expression is. His eyes zero in on my lower face, no doubt starting to bruise from Jeremy's manhandling.

"He did that?" his voice is low, scary.

"I'm alright, I promise" I try to assure him, also trying to keep my voice from shaking.

From underneath him, Jeremy coughs, "Calm down mate, honestly, I could have let you have her once I was done all you had to do was ask"

In a flash, Jack's fist has collided with Jeremy's jaw with a sickening crunch.

My eyes widen as he continues to deliver punch after punch, his anger never subsiding.

"Jack!" I scream. "Jack stop!" he doesn't hear me, he's blind with rage and even though it's a bit nice that someone is getting this angry over me, he could get into big trouble. And Jeremy could die.

So I do a very stupid thing.

I throw myself in front of Jeremy.

It's a miracle that Jack's fist stops, just before giving me a black eye, "Ana" he breathes, "what are you doing? You could get hurt"

The fist in front of my face is badly bruised and I grab his wrist, "Stop Jack, please. I'm not worth getting hurt over"

His eyes slowly go back to normal and it's like he finally takes a breath, "Don't-"

"You three, my office, now!"

I turn to see our director, Mrs Downey and I sigh as Jack and I stand up together.

Jeremy is so badly bruised that he needs two of his friends to help him up.

I don't let go of Jack's wrist when I start walking but he stops and I turn to see why. He's face to face with Abigail, I can't see his expression but she looks terrified.

"I'm a big believer of gender equality, which means I also believe girls can be hit when they deserve it" he says, "Don't ever try this again if you want to keep your face pretty"

She doesn't say anything, but I swear an Ana-like squeak escapes her lips.

I tug on Jack's wrist and he finally follows me to Mrs Downey office.

I sit in the middle because I'm afraid of what will happen to Jeremy if Jack gets within punching distance.

Mrs Downey doesn't ask for explanations, she just makes us sit there while she watches footage from the CCTV cameras in the hallway.

When it's done, she turns to three of us, "Ana, are you all right?" she asks me, concerned.

I nod, "I'm alright ma'am."

She nods and turns to Jack, "Young man, there are other ways to defend your friend, I don't have to tell you that violence is not the answer, I do know your heart was somewhat in the right place so the usual suspension is off the table, you will spend two weeks after school with Mr Trent doing whatever it is he needs you to do, cleaning, gardening, and anything else, understood?"
