This story spawned from a research paper I had to write for a college class. We were told to pick a topic in the world that meant a lot to us and that could fill six pages of well-pieced facts. Most chose something political. Others chose divorce, Child Protective Services, animal endangerment, I think one guy even chose bass fishing. I chose body images, and how the media influences them in teenagers because, as a teenager myself, I see this happening in my school and in the people around me. It affects people everyday.
From a research paper, this story evolved into a narrative about a teenage girl named Gemma, and how this topic affects her. The story deals with self harm, eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and suicide. I am aware these are uncomfortable topics, but they are real and present in the world today, and they need to be discussed. If you are having thoughts of suicide or self harm, this number is available: 1-800-273-8255 or https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/
This story is completely fictional, none of these events actually happened, and the characters are not real people. I wrote this story because I am passionate about the subject, and I wanted to discuss it in a format that was comfortable to read. Thank you so much for taking a chance on my story, and I hope you enjoy it.
