-[-Angel POV-]-
I stepped out of the tent, planning on going to the mess hall to get something to eat. When I stepped in there, it looked like all hell had broken loose.
"Jesus fucking-- Wait." I saw a counselor on the ground, curled up in a ball. She looked like she was on the brink of a panic attack. I ran over, trying not to startle her. Before I got there I turned around. "Everyone shut the fuck up!" I yelled. Silence. I turned back to the counselor. "Hey, hey. Are you okay?" I asked. She didn't respond, but she did open her eyes to look up at me. "Can I help you sit up?" I kept my voice soft and quiet. She once again didn't respond. "Do I need to get David?" She nodded this time. I let out a sigh and turned around. I pointed at a girl with her turquoise hair tied into pigtails. "You," I said, standing up, "go get David." She blinked at me for a second. "Go!" She ran off to go find David. After a while of me waiting with the counselor, the girl came back and David ran in after her. He saw me in the corner.
"Nikki told me that you needed me." He didn't see the counselor beside me at first. "What-- Gwen!" David suddenly saw her. "Angel, I've got this. Thank you for getting help." I smiled.
"I hope she's alright after." I walked away. I found Max sitting at a table with the turquoise haired girl and a boy. "Hey, Max." I suddenly wasn't hungry anymore. Which is funny, because I hadn't eaten anything good for a while. "I'm going back to the tent. I'll probably be asleep or something." I walked out before anyone could talk to me and I made my way back to the tent. I couldn't even explain how tired I really was. I made it into the tent and I passed out before I could even grab a snack from my bag.---
"Rise and shine, moron." Max. "You slept through the rest of lunch and half of dinner." I sat up and yawned, opening one eye. I covered my mouth with one hand while I yawned, my other arm being extended into the air. "Cute..." I could have sworn I heard someone say something, but it was only Max and I in the tent.
"Really? Man, I'm hungry..." I paused. "Max, give me a minute." I took out my scrunchie so I could re-brush my hair and put it back up. Once I was done with that, I realized that Max had left. When did he leave? I trudged out of the tent. I was met with Max and the two other kids I had seen him with.
"Took you long enough..." Max sighed.
"You... waited for me?"
"David told me to." Max mumbled, his cheeks darkening once again. The girl I had told to go get David ran up to me and tackled me, easily knocking me over.
"I'm Nikki! 12 years old. You must be Angel!" She introduced herself. Max pulled her off of me and I got up, brushing myself off.
"She's like a feral animal sometimes... " The other boy sighed, before sticking his hand out for a handshake. "Neil."
"Yes, these are my... the two most tolerable people at this hellhole. Nikki and Neil." Max pushed past the two of them. He was about to call them his friends... but he backed down?
"Well, as you two know, I'm Angel." My stomach growled and I turned to look at the mess hall. "And I'm really hungry. I hope you three have a good night, I'm going to go get something to eat."
"Good luck eating that shit." Neil huffed.
"I could eat anything..." I turned to look at Neil.
"Not that."
"Neil, you have no idea."
"Is she joining us tonight?" Nikki asked Max, bouncing slightly.
"I-- Are you guys in a cult?" I asked.
"No." Max replied, almost hissing. Nikki wasn't fazed by it. Wait, who was he responding to?
"Why not?" Neil suddenly turned. Oh.
"Can I just go get some food...?" I asked. "We can talk later."
"You're not eating that." Neil said.
"Neil, like I said I could--" I was cut off.
"No you couldn't, trust me." He grabbed my arm gently and started leading me to the docks. I heard a loud whisper, then an even louder whisper behind us, but nothing I could make out. My stomach growled. I whimpered, glancing back at the mess hall one more time.---
"Alright, guys, our first attempt to bust out of this god-forsaken hellhole didn't work. But tonight's gonna be different." Max sounded extremely determined.
"How?" I asked, having heard the story from Nikki on the way there.
"Because we have a secret weapon," He paused as someone stepped out from the shadows. "Billy Nikssilp."
"Call me Snake." The person, who I assumed was Billy, said. He had a candy cane sticking out of his mouth.
"Why do you have a candy cane, Billy?" I tilted my head. Don't candy canes get sharp on the end?
"No reason." Billy spat at me quietly. No one seemed to notice his sudden hostility towards me.
"He's an ex-Woodscout. And he's one of the best. Isn't that right, Billy?" Max said Billy's name with the slightest hint of hatred. It lead me to believe that Billy was not who he claimed to be, and Max was suspicious of him too.
"Got my search-and rescue badge in two weeks... Got my wilderness survival in one." Nikki looked amazed at Billy's claim.
"That's amazing!" She exclaimed, her eyes practically sparkling.
"I never had a choice..." Billy sighed. The sadness, or... whatever he was trying to make us believe, was fake. I could see a sinister glint in his eye.
"The Woodscouts are some of the most intense, militant campers on Lake Lilac." Max said. "Billy here escaped." Max sounded almost proud. As if he had escaped The Woodscouts.
"And why is he helping us?" Neil looked at Max, but didn't get an answer... well, not from Max, anyways.
"I'm not doing this for YOU. I made a vow." Billy looked directly at Neil. He suddenly looked hostile again.
"What kind of vow?" I raised an eyebrow at him, but he either didn't hear me or he was pretending not to.
"...Well, okay, let's get in the boat!" Neil sounded really nervous. I didn't blame him. "So... what're you gonna do on the outside?" He questioned.
"Probably live with the animals." Nikki smiled at the thought. "Try and get raised by wolves, maybe work my way up to alpha. Pee on stuff. What about you guys?"
"I dunno. Definitely not going home to my mom. She'd probably kill me if she found out that I left." I left it at that, ignoring the looks the other three were giving me. "Maybe find my way to an orphanage." I closed my eyes, and took a deep breath. I didn't open my eyes until Neil spoke.
"I think I'll go to my dad's house and tell him that mom sent me to an abusive summer camp. Pretend to like him more so she'll try to buy back my love." Neil shrugged.
"That's... really dark, Neil. How 'bout you, Max?" Nikki was still smiling until she looked to Max. "...Max?"
"Billy..." Max sounded worried, looking around at the area we were in, "where are you taking us?"
"...Shortcut." Billy responded. Alarm bells sounded in my head. He's lying! Suddenly, everything was a blurr. I watched as Max was stabbed with the candy cane I had asked about earlier. He charged at Nikki next.
"Yo! What gives?!" Billy shoved Nikki off the side of the boat. I tried to grab her hand, but failed as she ducked under water before I could.
"No girls allowed!" Billy was about to shove me off too, but I dodged his attack.
"Nikki!" I heard Neil call out to the now overboard Nikki. Everything was starting to fade out for me. I could barely breathe.
"Neil, quick! Grab his-! Aw, shit." Max realized that Neil was no longer there. I realized that Neil was calling for help behind us. I glanced back, and he was trying to swim to Nikki. "You never left them, did you Billy?!" Max yelled, catching my attention.
"I made a vow... to show others the glory of the Woodscouts. And I told you to call me Snake!" That's the last thing I remember hearing along with a crack of thunder before I passed out.
