Alexander Hamilton wrote. He wrote all the time, as much as possible, and as often as possible. That was his way of escaping the world. And it was one of the ways for him to communicate. He wrote to avoid looking at people, people who he couldn't talk to.

Alex tried to avoid the side eyed glances that people would give him, and avoid the strange looks as though they were trying to figure him out. It was harder than it sounded. He had a few friends, the Schuyler sisters, Hercules, and Lafayette, but even they sometimes would watch at him with concerning looks. He knew they didn't mean to, but he just wanted to be treated normally.

Sometimes it was like people thought he was deaf and the way some people talked about him made him sometimes wish he was. Some people hurt him more physically.

He tried to stand up for himself but when he told them to stop they would just stare at his hands like he was a freak. Once, in grade eight, Thomas Jefferson had grabbed his hands so Alex couldn't fight back. He'd almost had a panic attack until the principal (and Alex's adopted father), George Washington, has stopped Jefferson.

Alex dealt with this since he started high school. Before, when everyone was still in elementary school, most people accepted, or just ignored him. The only people who had come to the same high school as Alex were the Schuyler sisters and Hercules. His friends tried to stand but they only really saw each other at lunch.

It was the first day of grade ten, and the halls were crowded. Alex had left his friends so he could get to class early, he wanted to (hopefully) avoid dealing with most people. He looked around. There were people leaning against there lockers and talking to their friends and there were at least two couples making out. Alex stared at his face as he continued walking.

Suddenly he felt someone walk into him. "Shit, dude, watch where your going."

Sorry, Alex quickly signed, his hand in a fist making a circle on his chest.

He was about to continue walking when his notebooks were shoved out of his arm. He looked up to see Charles Lee in front of him.

Leave me alone, he signed.

"Quit it, freak." Charles Lee pushed Alex to the floor.

"Hey!" Alex looked up to see a boy storming towards him. He felt nervous, he'd never seen the boy before.

"Leave him alone," the boy yelled.

"Who's going to make me?" Lee asked, stepping away from Alex, getting distracted by the boy.

Alex got to his feet and stumbled to out of the way. He stared at the new boy who was now arguing with Lee.

"You're not worth the trouble." Lee kicked Alex's notebooks before walking away.

Alex scrambled to pick up his books. He counted them and looked around for the last one.

The boy looked at him and handed the book to him. "Are you okay?" He asked.

Alex nodded and signed Thank you.

The boy's mouth widened into an "o" shape, before smiling at Alex. I'm John, he signed.

He knows ASL, Alex thought, the new, hot, boy knows ASL.

I'm Alex, he signed, before quickly writing something down in his notebook and ripping out the page.
