Poisonous Vows

Marriage is a strange thing,
Don't you think?

You make a promise to somebody,
In belief that you will never break it.

But,
Promises are made to be broken,
Aren't they?
It's inevitable.

People just like to believe things,
Not caring how ludicrous they sound,
In hopes that those things will bring them eternal joy:
The rings, the gowns,
The pointless vows.

They would mean just as much on any other occasion.

Those vows are never brought up again,
Because nothing feels the same.
But they made a promise, and secretly broke it.
They told a lie, both of them.

The hardest part of it all is:

Nobody ever understands what heartbreak is
Until it's too late,
Because it's a pain like any other,
A pain worse than death.

Nobody ever understands what heartbreak is
Until  it's too late,

Because poison only tastes like poison after you've swallowed it.
