Sam and Colleen Holt loved stargazing. It always gave them an escape from the buiseness of their day-to-day lives. The Holts had stargazed from their roof many times, and it was always the same. Until the spaceship streaked through the sky.
~~~
It began like any other night. They talked, ate dinner, and cleaned up the house. Then they climbed out the second story window, and lay flat on the roof. As they looked up at the stars, it seemed as though they were suspended in the middle of the sky, the stars like a million fireflies. Suddenly, the still, quiet night was broken by a twinkling light. At first they thought it was a plane, but as it grew closer, they could see that it was something else. Something.... alien. They scrambled up from their position and watched as it streaked over their heads and disappeared into the forest behind their town. They looked at each other and grinned.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking," asked Sam, grinning.
Colleen grinned back. "Field trip!"
They scrambled up and climbed back inside, racing to the car. On their way, they grabbed some flashlights from the kitchen junk drawer and the keys from their peg, then jumped in the car and drove off. It only took them 10 minutes to get to the forest, where they parked their car at the beginning of a popular hiking trail. There they climbed out and set off. After several minutes of hiking, Collen grabbed Sam's arm.
"Over there. Look," she pointed, to a faint glow coming from behind a ridge, just off the trail.
They scrambled up and over the ridge, then stopped abruptly. There, right before their eyes, was a spaceship. It was silver, with large engines on the side, which were bright teal, and explained the glow. As they were watching, the top fizzled down, and revealed two pods inside. They were silver too, with a glowing teal window revealing... children? Colleen and Sam rushed down the slope, and clambered inside the ship.
On closer inspection, the pods were damaged, mostly the one on the left, where the ship had landed. They were leaking fluid, with the a large puddle surrounding the one on the left, and a slightly smaller one on the right. Inside, sure enough, were two children. They both had silvery hair, held back by pointed ears, and triangular pink marks under their eyes. The one on the left appeared to be a young girl,maybe 4 or 5, whose hair hung down her back. On the right it appeared that there was an older boy, maybe 10 or so. Suddenly, the pods hissed open and the children fell out. Startled, Colleen and Sam were just able to catch them. They stayed asleep, but a crumpled piece of paper fell on the floor. Sam picked it up, and read the note aloud.
These are our children, Katie and Matthew. Our planet is about to be destroyed, and the only chance they have at survival is to go into cryopods. To whoever finds this note, please take care of them, and teach them to blend into their adopted species.
Sincerly,
A concerned family.
