It was another rainy day. Alex walked to the bus in the rain, he didn't even bother to bring a umbrella because to be honest they scared him.. if it got to windy the umbrella would turn against him and go rogue and turn upside down and all this other crazy stuff.
But the real actual reason he was walking in the rain was because of this boy who lived about 6 houses down from him. He had just moved here and Alex had been observing. Every morning Alex walks to the bus at 7:00 sharp. And as he walks down the sidewalk he passes the red 2nd story house that the boy lived in. The boy would walk outside at about 7:05 every morning and sit on the steps for this black truck to come. The boy would go over to the truck and get in the back seat and then the truck would leave.
Alex knew that even on rainy days the boy would sit outside.
So here he was cold, wet, walking in the rain just so he could see the boy. They didn't even talk. At first Alex would just walk by the house. Then it became a glance. And now it was a smile for those 5 seconds it took to walk past his house.
He didn't even know why he did this. The boy was in Alex's math class and he sat in the back next to the Schuler sisters. He would sometimes glance back and catch him laughing at something one of them had said.
Alex was two houses away from the boys house. He smoothed out his hair a little and straightened his jacket and practiced his smile.
As he came up on the house the boy was already on the steps. Just as he was about to do his daily smile "hi" said the boy that caught Alex way of guard. "Hi " said Alex smiling and continuing his walk.
As Alex got on the bus and sat down he thought about the boy. Wow it usually took two weeks to move on to the next stage of walking by his house.
He thoughtSuddenly he felt someone tap his shoulder. "Oh um hi.. sorry um my friend usually takes me to school but he couldn't come because of the rain... mind if I sit here" said the curly haired boy. For a moment Alex starred blankly at the boy. Alex had walked by his house everyday for almost a month and only now have they said hi.
"Oh yah! For sure" said Alex scooting over. "Thanks.. I'm John" said the boy. "Alex" he said smiling.
He loved rainy days. He would still walk by his house everyday and smile and say hi to the John but only on rainy days would John walk with him.
It soon became a regular thing for Alex to check the weather and celebrate when it called for a chance of rain.
