This mountain is located on the border between Kediri regency, Blitar regency, and Malang regency, about 27 km east of the center of Kediri.
Like Merapi Mountain, Kelud Mountain is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Since the year 1000 AD, Kelud has erupted more than 30 times, with the largest eruption magnitude 5 Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI). The last eruption of Kelud Mountain occurred in 2014.
Kelud Mountain has become the tourism object of Kediri Regency with the main attraction is lava dome. At the top of Gajahmungkur built a viewing post with stairs made of cement. On weekend evenings, the lava dome is illuminated by colored lights. In addition, it has also provided rock climbing paths on top of Sumbing, hot water baths, and flying fox.
Kediri District action to build this tourist area received a protest from Blitar regency, which considers the top region of Kelud is its territory. This territorial dispute is particularly tapered after the decree of the Governor of East Java Number 188/113 / KPTS / 013/2012 stating that Kelud is the top region of Kediri regency.
