Chapter Two

Jasper's POV

"Come on Nat!" he called, gesturing toward the forest.

"Alright, alright!" she laughed, "I'm coming!"

They hiked through the towering trees, shadows cast themselves in blobby patterns across them. Leaves crunched under their feet, crinkling. It was the start of fall, that meant that the leaves would soon fall from the trees and overwhelm the forest, swamping it in the dead corpses of the shedding trees. Sunlight filtered through the cracks in the leaves and branches.

"So." Natalie said. Oh no. He knew what she was going to say. "How's your relationship with Alex coming?"

Even though he had known that she would say that, his face burned. He had made the mistake of telling her about his secret crush on her. He had known her for a long time, years and years. Why had he told Natalie? Well, he may have accidentally blurted it out when she asked him if he liked anyone.

~Flashback~

"So. Do you like anyone?" Natalie wiggled her eyebrows up and down. It was spring, they were all fourteen. He blushed and before he could stop himself, words he had meant to say in his head left his lips.

"I think Alex is cute."

He clamped his hands over his mouth. Had he actually done that? He had actually done that. WAIT, HE HAD ACTUALLY DONE THAT. NO NO NO NO AND NO. He clamped his hands over his mouth. Well, it was out now. His secret that he had kept for so long was out.

"Awwww! That's so cute!" Natalie squealed. "I already ship it!"

What?! No! He didn't want to be 'shipped,' he didn't even know what that meant!

"I think I'll call you, hmm, JALEX!"

"What! No! Please don't tell her!" he begged.

She sighed. "Fine. But I still ship it!"

She began to ask him questions--how long he had liked her, what he thought of her as, and to describe her.In the midst of her asking questions, he turned and ran off into the forest, his face feeling like it was on fire, and stumbled in to the camp. He fell down the slope that lead in to their camp and sat up. He was sitting at Alex's feet.

"You know what, I'm not even going to ask." then she turned and walked away, but he was sure that she was smiling. He brushed his dirty blonde hair out of his face and grinned in her direction. Originally, he had thought he wouldn't have a chance with her, but maybe, he just might.
