Jasper's POV
We fell into what seemed like sand. Really, really, dry sand. It got in our hair and clothes, and more unpleasant places. I sat up, carefully wiping the sand from my eyes. I winced in pain as I stood up, swaying before I caught by balance. It had been a hard fall. I brushed my hands through my sandy hair, and shook out my shirt. Nat and Alex were standing up and doing the same, their faces masks of disgust. We lived in a forest, did you expect anything else?
Alex stumbled, her face pale. Whatever she did must have sapped her strength. I caught her, steadying her. She looked like she might collapse, so I continued to support her. Nat looked over at us, her eyebrows furrowing.
"I'll go look for the Time Orb. You two stay here and try to make some kind of shelter." She paused, glancing around at the barren landscape. "On second thought, come with me. There's no way you could find anything to make a shelter with."
We all walked for a ways until the sun began to set, slowly sinking behind the horizon. Bright strips of vivid orange and red radiated off the yellow orb, casting their colors to the sky. Shadows grew longer and longer against the sand and rare shrubs, coating the ground. Wow, I was poetic today.
Alex had insisted on walking on her own after a little ways. Of course she had. I thought. I couldn't say I was disappointed, but... It was complicated. Nat had no idea where she was going, but neither did I, so I didn't blame her. Her hair had come out of the braid, and waved gently in the breeze. Alex, on the other hand, couldn't stand having her hair down. A few hours ago she had torn a strip of cloth from the leg of her jeans and tied her hair into a loose ponytail. I watched her out of the corner of my eye. Even in the fading light I could see that she was still slightly pale from the stunt she had pulled back in the other world. I couldn't be angry with her, I tried, but it was practically impossible.
Eventually in the trek we have resorted to silence, Alex didn't want to talk about what had happened in the other world, and she had every right not to. We weren't about to force her to talk.
Alex glanced over at me, catching my eyes. She raised an eyebrow and mouthed, I'm fine. I only shrugged, which resulted in her rolling her eyes. I was glad it was dark, it hid the blush that was inevitably spreading to my cheeks.
"I know you two are having some kind of silent conversation." Natalie spoke.
~~~~~~~~~TIME~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The entire time I was wondering : why hadn't we seen anyone? Weren't we supposed to see, like, camels or something in the desert? ...Okay, the "camel" part might have been a bit cliche, but I was surprised we hadn't seen any signs of life yet. Considering this, when we did see life, it wasn't good life, I guess you could say. A dozen men dressed in all black came at us from literally nowhere. They wrestled us to the ground and tied our hands behind our backs.
"You will answer to the All Master for trespassing on the Shuizou's land."
Ah. That was why no one was here. I heard either Nat or Alex mutter, "You've got to be kidding me."
Then the men ungraciously flung us across their shoulders. At least we didn't have to walk now.
~~~~~~~~~~TIME SKIP JASPER U SARCASTIC LIL BOI~~~~~~~~~~
We were thrown in seperate cells. My head hit the back wall and my vision swam. My ears rang and the back of my head flared in pain. I probably had a concussion. "Well that's convenient." I mumbled, reaching up to rub the back of my head as I watched one of the men close and lock the cell door. He looked at me for a second, a skeptic expression spreading over his face. Great. They're already doubting the "little scrawny boy", as Alex liked to tease me. I didn't mind her or Nat calling me that, but I absolutely despised it when other people made references to my scrawniness. At least I was taller that Nat and Alex, if only by a little bit.
I stumbled to my feet and fell back against the wall. My ears rang and the blood rushed to my head, causing me to momentarily black out. My head pounded, my pulse echoing in my ears. I blinked roughly a few times and pressed my palms against my forehead before finding my bearings. It was dark in the cell, and the only thing I could think was,
Great. Another cell.
This was the second time this had happened, eventually it all had to stop. We needed to get back to our world, the only problem was, we didn't know how. The Time Orb might have to recharge, wherever it is.
There was another problem. If we couldn't find the Time Orb, we couldn't go home.
At this point, everything seemed like a problem. Our life seemed revolved around problems. And now we were hostages in a foreign land that apparently hated us.
~~~~~~~~~~THIS IS TIME~~~~~~~~~~
An hour later my head still hurt and I didn't think I could hear out of my left ear. Out of boredom I had resorted to throwing small pebbles across the cell, watching them hit the wall, and fall back down to the ground. I leaned against the opposite wall and heard footsteps faintly coming down the hall. Footsteps had been coming and going, distant voices talking in a strange language. I glanced to my left as two guards walked past, dragging Alex behind them. Her hands were bound in thick metal chains and a gag had been placed over her mouth. She locked eyes with me, shadows cast over her face from the flickering torches. A glimpse of uncertainty shone through her usually unperturbable expression. She seemed surprised to see me, as if she hadn't expected to see me.
Faster than they had come, the guards were gone, taking Alex with them. And I was stuck in a cell, rendered useless.
