Nick

I huff out trying not to show my aggravation. It was almost time for my afternoon class and yet still; here stood Robert by my desk as if he were the one to be lecturing my seminar today. His stubbornness, though it came in handy at times, was impeccably unbreakable and just as annoying. The fact that he was now arguing the case for his daughter didn't help because I just knew he would never drop this conversation until he got a yes from me, not if it meant it was for the well being of his daughter. Though he tried to make it seem as though it were for my wellbeing.

"No Robert." I drawl out, "For the last time. Absolutely not."

"She's already seen the ad Nick," he shrugs, "She's gotta be on her way right now honestly."

"Are you trying to set your daughter up for failure? Or do you just not know who I am? Who's to say I won't drink her dead? Who's to say she won't get caught up in the wrong crowd with me."

"I am, boy! If you don't sit your ass down, talking nonsense. That's my daughter Nick, and you'll do right by her. Besides, I didn't set this up for her, I did it for you." He crosses his arm and leans back on a table, "You need change Nick. She can bring change, she's got that in her heart."

"Rob," I sigh, "it looks like you've gotten so old that you actually no longer realize the words spewing out your mouth..."

"Old? Don't you talk to me about old. Aren't you over three hundred?!"

"Two! Hundred. Lower that first digit mister.  Regardless of that I'm still in the body of one in their mid twenties and the mind too if I may add. Sorry if my habits offend, technically I'm still quite young."

"You're a lie," he scuffs lifting his glasses up on his stubby broad nose before scratching the gray hairs on his face.

"Okay so maybe my brains more like late twenties early thirties still-"

"Nick." Robert sighs frustrated clearly not interested in hearing distracting tangent, "It'll be good for you. And good for her. She's been so excited for the lessons you know, I support anything my baby girl is up for so long as it's beneficial and makes her happy. So if not for yourself and definitely not for her, at least, do it for me. As a friend." He looks at me intently, "Please." He adds with a genuine plea.

I suck my teeth and slap my folder down on the table, crossing my arms as I grew weak against his plea. Why does he have to do that? "You truly are annoying Rob." I huff and then the door pulls open revealing a student I, to my dismay, recognize.

"Early aren't you?" I call to them before looking back down to Robert and whispering with slight anger, "Fine. Just don't bother me about her okay."

"Deal." He pats my shoulders before whispering, "You be kind though, you're still getting paid for it."

"Whatever." I watch him walk towards the door, stopping just for a moment to greet the girl headed towards my desk. They speak low but talk as if they're good friends and she kisses his cheek smiling charismatically. I notice then that even if I didn't know her as his daughter, I would've realized it, for they looked so undoubtably alike. From the small stubby nose, tall strong stature, slim form, and walnut colored hair and skin tone. They even shared the warm brown eyes, big and cat like.

"Jayla?" Rob points to me, "Professor Nick. Nick, my daughter Jayla." He smiles short and swiftly, "You kids be good, you two are familiar with each other enough." He looks to his daughter, "Don't take too long, Nicks got a class soon."
