Shole stood behind me while Isa and Amon took care of the man downstairs.
With me down on my knees, I stared at Jay now laid out on the burgundy, sleek couch. I brought her to my office not sure if I should wait until I get home. If I had to do this now, I will because if this was my only chance then I can't risk waiting.
"Does she mean something to you?" Shole asked curiously with slight fear in his voice. A doubt that I felt coursing through me as well.
"No Shole." I ball my hand up into a fist, "I just... This one is different... She's not Sustenance," burying my head in hand I huff weakly, "Her father is... He's a friend."
"So that's it then," now anger, "You'll be bound to this Amaranthine- and you're okay with that..."
"Shole please!" I yell in an attempt to reason with him and secretly myself, "Of course I'm not fucking okay with that man but I don't have much of a choice." Sighing I say much quietly, "Alright?"
"Fine. Just do it." he sits down next to me on the couch, "I'm here for you."
I glance at him. His brown eyes look solid enough to make me feel relaxed. If all hell breaks loose, at least I have Shole, right? I bring my wrist to my mouth and hesitated for a second, my heart beats so fast I was afraid it'd jump out. Here I was... About to do the one thing I swore I would never do in my life. Pushing that doubt away I bite down on my wrist and carefully place it against her mouth, parting her lips to make sure my blood pours carefully in her mouth.
When it does and nothing happens, I panic again fearing I waited too long, or doubted whether or not it was truly her I witnessed. She wasn't moving, or even breathing, not even a cough to let me know I was doing something. That my attempt at trying to fix my mistake wasn't impossible or a lost cause.
When I see my skin already start to heal, I reach for my pocket knife finding it not there, "I need a knife." I tell Shole and he quickly hands me his own pocket knife. I slice my wrist and some of my blood spills over her face, staining her plump lips shiny red. The rest goes into her mouth, and I'm mumble a quiet prayer for a chance this time.
"Please, please, please..." I whisper, "Come on..." And as if my honest beg was answered, I watch Jayla's lips move and her head lift a bit. Her tongue peaks and she makes a small noise. But just as fast she starts to swallow and she starts coughing aggressively, sitting up with quick instinct to help the liquid down her throat. I stroke her back but she didn't seem to notice or open her eyes, she just moans and whimpers as she's probably in a great deal of pain.
"Give her more blood. Don't stop," Shole urges.
"How much?"
"Until she stops. She needs enough or she won't heal properly, she won't survive," he continues talking even though I've already placed my wrist against her mouth again and she drank willingly. "Without enough," he says, "She won't transition into Amaranthine so she needs enough."
I want to ask him how he knows this but I don't because it seemed greatly insignificant to all else that also needed to be worried about.
Her hands comes over my wrist holding it against her mouth and I only then notice the strange feeling of being fed from. How the tables have turned greatly I wonder.
Her mouth parts from my wrist with a small 'pah' sound. And she immediately starts to fall back easily against the couch but I readily catch her and ease her back down gently. Her eyes flutter open and I'm filled with elation and relief.
"God I could kiss you..." I say lowly with a smile I can't repress.
She answers by only moving her brows just slightly, confusion and fear eminent in her fragile expression. And just like that she's out again. But I'm relaxed. Sitting back immediately, with my butt against the floor and my back against the legs of the couch, I throw my arms over my bent knees. Dropping my head I laugh quietly in hysteria and relief.
