"Why are you doing this to our village?!" shouted Midori's mother as she slid the blade across the half-lizard man's lower leg, causing the crimson-colored liquid to trickle out of the fresh gash and drip to the ground.
The creature cackled. "Wouldn't you like to know, beautiful," he sneered, a sadistic grin spreading across his face, revealing his jagged teeth as well as normal teeth. "I'd like to cut open that pretty little neck of yours and drain you of your suculant blood!"
Midori had never seen her mother so ferocious before, and right now . . . she couldn't decide which was scaring her more: her mom or the creature trapped within the jutsu's roots.
The woman snapped her head to the side and glared down at Midori. "I want you to rip him apart, limb-from-limb, darling!"
She quickly stepped back and shook her head in refusal. "N-No," she said, "I'm not killing him."
"Aww, how sweet." mocked the creature, his reptilian tongue slithering from between his strange lips. "She doesn't want to kill me."
Her mother's grip tightened around the kunai and she shifted her gaze back to the hybrid. "I don't like being threatened, but when someone comes into my home and steals my son away from me, then cowers back to their damn hole . . . some unlucky bastard's going to pay dearly!"
Midori's eyes widened as they fixated on the back of her mother's head. What . . . does she mean? Is Ichirou . . . gone?
The man's tongue lurched out, then slinked back into his mouth. "He came of his own, free will." he said, sounding pleased. "It amuses me how much your attitude has changed towards me since you've obtained a weapon, beautiful."
He wiggled around in the roots' grip and gestured his head in the direction of the street Midori had just came from, a snide smirk on his human half. "A saying you should never believe: you should keep your friends close, but your enemies closer . . ."
Midori and her mother both shared an inquiring look, before hearing a calm pair of feet making their way towards Masahiko added by the multitude of claws scratching the pavement. They slowly shifted their attention from the trapped lizard-man to Masahiko and . . . what they saw made both of their hearts sink to the pits of their stomach and eyes widen in horror: It was a hairless wolf-like man down on his four paws, stalking towards Masahiko.
N-No, thought Midori, her face paled and mouth agape in horror.
"Masahiko-kun!" exclaimed Midori's mother, causing the dark-haired lad's head to snap upright and out of his propped up knees.
"Ayama-san?" he inquired, his blinded eyes searching for the woman.
"Get up!" she shouted, rushing over to him. "Run!"
As Masahiko attempted to climb to his feet, a force much too strong for him, tackled him to the ground and clawed at his abdomen, shredding the skin like ribbons and sending the blood splattering all over the ground and the wailing boy.
Midori crumbled to her knees and watched in terror as he was mauled. She cupped her hands over her ears as the boy shouted out her name and cried bloody tears that fell upon unlistening ears. "N-No," she whispered, rocking herself back-and-forth in shock. N-No . . . why? Masahiko-kun . . . why?
