" They rode off into the sun set and lived happily ever after" My mother read the ending as we laid in my bed. A tear fell from my eyes looking at her to see her confused appearance.
" Whats wrong dear?" Her furrowed brows scrunched even more, smiling half heartedly wipingping the tethat trailed from my eyes way because of my exceedingly empathetic state.
" I was just wondering. What happened to that monster? Why did he have to die? " I asked watching her pouted expression as she brewed over my question.
" Because Hun, he was going to kill the prince " She stated cradling me to her chest in efforts to comfort me.
"But what if the monster just wanted to do something else? What if he wasn't going to hurt anyone? " I broke from her embrace to see that her smile still remained. If anything, more prominent than before.
"Well hunny, if a monster ever does try to hurt you, I want you to have this." She shifted as I began to register her efforts to unclasp her necklace. A raw crystal stone embellished with gold wires rested in her hands, our gaze upon the red hue emitting from the stone was unwavering. As we sat there for a moment in silence, I suddenly realized how my mother had worn this necklace for as long as I can remember. I gazed up at her briefly to see an anomalous expression resting upon her face, her eyes watering to the brim as a gentle smile illuminated from her lips. She had suddenly become evocative with a fixated look upon the gem, just when I began to spiral into my own confusion she sighed heavily out of her thoughts, looking over to me.
"This will protect you, it has protected me and daddy forever. So now, it will protect you " she softly spoke brushing my hair to one side. I pondered what she meant and what she had said as I couldn't make the connection with the two. A stone, protecting my mother and father from harm. Seemed illogical.
"Mommy you can have it back if it makes you sad" once the words left me she quietly laughed.
"No hunny, I believe my time with it has passed. Far overdue as a matter of fact. It will set mommy's mind at ease to know my little princess is safe from all those mean monsters" as she spoke she had secured the chain around my neck, however at the time I didn't notice the gemstone shift in color.
"W-what if, monsters are mean because people think they are?"
"Well, I'm not sure, I have never thought of it that way?" She paused looking off at the wall across from us to entertain the thought. Laughing gently to herself before she fixated her gaze upon me once more.
