Three Weeks Later, Saturday
"That movie was awesome! I loved it as a book but the movie was so good too." Oscar exclaims, accidentally dumping a few pieces of popcorn in his excitement. Julian and Kim laugh, falling a few feet behind him.
"I'm really glad he liked it. He was obsessed with the book and I really didn't want it to be a let down." Kim whispers, looping her arm with his. They bump as they walk, watching Oscar acting like a little kid.
"You don't have to worry any more, that kid loved it. He was trying to explain it to me during previews, he lost me at the word future." Julian laughs, shaking his head in slight embarrassment.
"I'm really glad you came with us today, I would've probably died without you. I was so bored, but keeping you awake really kept me awake. And it means a lot to Oscar that you came, he really likes you." She tells him.
"He does?" Julian asks, stopping to get his car keys out and tilting his head in disbelief.
"Oh, yeah totally. He loves having you around. You don't judge, you're nice, you'll do whatever, and you're great to me, all things he's looking for. You know, you're absolutely taking him to see Infinity Wars next week."
Julian laughs, clicking the keys to unlock the car. "Sounds good to me. It's just funny to me that my own kids could hate me so much but someone else's kid likes me, and that kid's dad hates me too."
"How Drew feels about you doesn't matter to Oscar even half as much as what I feel about you, and I adore you." Kim says, stealing a kiss and heading to the car. Oscar's already in, sticking his head through the window. "Come on Julian, I'm starving."
Julian laughs and gets into the car, not being able to help looking into the rear view mirror at Oscar's happy face and Kim's gentle bliss, her enjoying the spring air. He reaches for his knee, grunting. Kim places her hand over his. "You need to get that looked at."
"It's fine, I'm just old." He says, starting the car and trying to drop the conversation. Kim keeps her eyes glued on him, trying to get him to see reason. He refuses to look at her, keeping his eyes on the road.
"Fine, if you're gonna be that way than we're listening to The Greatest Showman soundtrack." Kim says, turning on the car's CD player. Julian and Oscar groan. "Oh shut it, both of you. I know you like it." She says, playfully resting her head on Julian's shoulder.
He laughs and holds her hand, glancing at his hand still on the wheel. The tan line from his wedding ring was all but gone now and the pain attached to it was no longer all he thought about. He had something now, something good.Julian wipes a drop of sauce off Kim's chin with his napkin, taking the opportunity for a kiss. Oscar makes an exaggerated face, fake gagging. "Listen here little man," Julian starts jokingly, not able to finish the sentence.
They go back to eating and bantering, Oscar making some joke about Julian jumping at a loud part in the movie. Julian's phone rings, interrupting the embarrassment. "Julian Jero- Why the Hell are you calling me, Tony?... Uh-huh... And she's screaming?... What'd she say?... Incoherent?... I'll be right there, keep her from breaking anything." He hangs up, glancing between Oscar and Kim. "There's a woman at the pub demanding to see me. I have to go right now, but I can come back for you two in a little while if you want to take your time to finish."
"We're almost done, we'll come with you." Kim offers, finishing the last few bites of her sandwich. Julian smiles. Having someone in general was something he'd never dreamed of having again, let alone having someone devoted."I can't even go to a movie and lunch with my family with out something happening here?" Julian asks, slamming his hands on the bar top. Tony jumps, hanging his head in shame. "I'm sorry, Mr. Jerome, she was real scary."
"Christ, you're such a chicken shit. Where is she now?" He asks. "I-in the bathroom. She took a real big drink and said she had to go." Tony explains, still not making eye contact. The bathroom door and Julian turns to face her, pure anger and frustration in his eyes. "Allison, why are you terrorizing my bartender?"
"I was waiting for you, asshole. We need to talk." She states, putting her hands on her hips. Julian swallows and motions to his office, she knew the way. He stops at Kim and Oscar. "I'll explain everything later, if she doesn't bite my head off first. I have no idea what I did." He says, rushing to catch up.
Allison knocks everything off his desk, just because. Julian gets on his knees and pulls put the picture of him and his three kids, checking it for damage. There thankfully is none. He uses the desk to stand up, shaking out his leg. Allison sits in his chair, turning to face him.
"What do you want, Allison? Why are you here? Why are you causing such a scene?" He asks. "Why? Why? Because I'm pissed at you. I'm pregnant, Julian, I'm pregnant. And it's yours. Now I need to pay for the abortion."
Julian goes silent, still processing what he's been told. Allison rolls her eyes and leans back in the chair, checking her nails while he stands there in awe. "Earth to Julian, I need my money and to get this thing out of me."
"Please don't get rid of it, it's my child too. I'll pay you well for brining them to term, after that you'll never need to see either of us again." He promises, watching the words come out of his mouth but still not processing them completely. "How much is paying well?" She asks, a smile starting to form.
Julian takes a second to actually think. "A thousand a month." He says. "That's nothing. If I'm giving up my body for you, I want at least ten a month."
"Two."
"Eight."
"Three."
"Five and I want a spa membership."
"Four and you can have the spa membership until the kid's born. That's my final offer." Julian says, crossing his arms. "Four thousand dollars a month and a spa pass, good. You're also taking care of any medical bills." She tells him, scribbling something down on a scrap of paper. "That's my phone number and my account number at the bank. If the first payment isn't in by tomorrow morning, I get rid of it." She says, getting up and walking out.
Julian picks up handfuls of stuff off the ground and dumps it back onto his desk, his head starting to spin from the conversation he'd just had. It didn't seem real. He doesn't even notice Kim come in and help him. It takes her getting him to sit before he realised she's there. "Julian, is everything alright?"
He shakes his head. "That girl, her name is Allison, she claims she's pregnant with my baby. Now I'm paying her four thousand dollars a month to keep it and I'm not even more she's really pregnant. I have a feeling she is, but I just got roped into being a single father. I live in an office at a bar, I sleep on a pull out couch, and now I'm looking at being a single dad. What have I done?"
Kim rubs his arm. "You made an honest mistake. Everyone slips up once and a while. You were probably lonely and she was fun. It takes two to tango and she didn't remember protection either."
"None of them did. I didn't just have sex with her. It was her and two of her friends, at the same time." He tells her. "You had a foursome? On a pullout couch? That's actually really impressive. That's beside the point. I'm here for you, and I'll be there for the baby too. I am an OB, I'll make sure everything is going okay with Julian Junior."
"I was expecting you to slap me and take off." He admits. "Why? You didn't cheat on me. If she already knows she's pregnant than it must've happended before we started dating. We weren't a couple yet. No harm, no foul."
"Oh Kim, I don't deserve you." He says, cupping her cheeks. She closes her eyes and places her hands over his. "That's the thing about a relationship, it's not just about what you already deserve, it's about what you can earn. Just because you don't think you deserve it yet, doesn't mean you won't in the future. Julian, you've been kicked your whole life, don't let it keep you down now. Come on, we should probably go tell Oscar that you'll be staying with us more often."
Julian nods and presses his forehead to hers.
