"Can you believe it? Kade asked me to hang out with him tonight after school!"
I smile at Elise, teeth and all. "No way! I'm so happy for you, Lise!"
She beams. "Thanks! I'm happy too! I can just picture us together with two kids in a tiny home all happy and loving."
I don't think Kade does lovey-dovey shit, my brain points out.
"Do you see it, Parks?"
"Huh?" I ask, snapping out of my bothersome thoughts. Maybe Kade wasn't right for Elise after all. Elise has always been a cheerful optimist and I doubt that Kade is willing to set aside his illegal street fighting to settle down with Elise and embrace the happiness he doesn't have.
"I just asked if you could see us together in the future, but you weren't listening," she huffs, her face melting from her gigantic smile into a pouted lip.
"Sorry, I was just really picturing you two together in the future. Like creating a little scenario in my head, so I blanked out."
Her full-fledged grin returns, "That's okay! I'm just so happy!"
Elise's happiness and constant energy is starting to wear me out so I have to shove another grin on my face, praying she doesn't see through the fakeness. "I have to get to class but text me, okay?"
"Yep! Bye!" She awkwardly walks away with a bit of a bounce in her step and I watch her leave. Slamming my locker closed, I heave a large sigh and shove down the feeling of jealousy I suddenly have creeping up in my chest. Ever since we were young, I have never been jealous of Elise for anything except her body. I've always longed to be as stick-thin as her and to be so confident about my body. However, this jealous-like feeling is different and I can't quite decipher what it is. I shake my head with a frown, scattering my confusing thoughts and head off to class.
"P!" Avery suddenly shouts, startling me with her loud voice ringing close to my ear.
"What the hell?" I snap once my heartbeat subsides, glaring at her as anger blossoms in my chest. "You can't just creep up on me like that!"
"I don't give two shits about scaring the life out of you when you set Kade and Elise up," she yell-whispers.
I widen my eyes and avert eye contact. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Of course you do, you stupid-ass! Your drunk-self hopped in Kade's back seat and you never told me what happened next!"
I smirk. "So you're only upset about me not telling you every single detail?"
