The effect of words

Someone's words towards me matter the same amount that the person saying them matters to me, and often, the amount that I care about someone is based off of the words that they say to me. For example, if a friend that I really care about gives me a complement, then that complement holds a greater weight than if someone I dislike we to tell me the same thing, solely because of the fact that my friend is closer to my heart. But the same holds true to an insult. When my friend criticizes me, it will hurt me more than hearing that same criticism from a disliked acquaintance.
I think this is interesting because sometimes we let the words of others hurt us, and it hurts more when it wasn't even their intent to hurt you.
