Chapter Thirty-Five❝It's one thing to fall in love.
It's another to feel someone else falling in love with you.❞
"Stay safe, Ellie!"
El was currently trying to get out of her grandmother's grip, fumbling with the gym bag over her shoulder. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, especially with the audience just a few feet away.
"Gran, it's just a weekend trip," she mumbled, but couldn't help crack a smile at her grandmother's affection. "I won't be gone long."
"Oh, I know." Her gran finally pulled back and yelled to the people behind El, "Take care of her for me, kids!"
"We will, Mary!" Daisy let out from the car.
"Stop calling me Mary!"
Giggling, she gave a big kiss to her grandfather's cheek before sauntering to the old convertible that Zach had rented for the summer. The roof was down, and she could see Zach with his muscle tee (for once), Daisy with her heart-shaped sunglasses, and —
"Jeff! You made it!" she let out, throwing her bag aside and wrapping the boy in a warm hug. She went from seeing him almost everyday to barely hanging out; she'd missed him terribly.
He groaned. "Your friends basically threatened me if I didn't come," he mumbled, gesturing not-obviously to the blonds at the front.
They only grinned at him mischievously.
"Quit lying, Jones," Daisy rolled her eyes. "You so wanted to come us. You should be grateful now that you're part of the cool older-kids club."
"Truly honoured."
Theo snorted on a laugh. Stars; she loved hearing him laugh. With Jeff sitting between them, she tilted her head slightly. "Hi," she breathed.
His lips grew into a seductive smile. "Hey."
Her hand almost floated to her own, feeling light-headed just remembering it. His eager lips on hers; his bright eyes burning in the dark. That one kiss made her stay up all night, feeling hot and heavy.
And from the way he was looking at her, he felt the same.
Jeff noticed the heightened chemistry between them. He shifted uncomfortably.
"Uh, do you guys want to switch or — "
"Let's get going!"
Jeff fell back against the seat with a grunt as Zach reared up the engine and they all but dashed away from El's porch.
