Chapter Two
❝I don't believe in magic, the young boy said.
The old man smiled, and said — you will, when you see her.❞
He was awake, but he wasn't.
He opened his eyes, trying to ignore the throbbing pain in his skull, but it was useless. He just kept rolling over the bed until he fell to the floor with a loud thud, and his groans only grew from then on.
He didn't bother to stand up. His body felt like it was made from a thousand bricks, but it was his mind that truly felt heavy. Like an indescribable weight was making him sink further into the darkness that consumed his consciousness.
The boy stayed there — unflinching, unmoving, right on the ground. He was better off like this.
"What the hell?" Zach let out across the room. Not a few seconds passed before the front door banged open, and he squinted his eyes a bit, catching the glimpse of his friend's dirty blond hair. "Where the hell did you go last night? I searched for your ass everywhere and now I find you passed out on the floor?"
He only grunted in response.
"That's it, you're getting up."
Zach grabbed his arms and hauled him all the way up to the bed, even though he knew fairly well that his friend was in no right state of mind. But he let him go anyway, causing him to slump against himself again.
"I hate you," he muttered.
"The feeling is mutual." His roommate grabbed a chair from the corner of the room and brought it to the middle, plopping down on it before facing him. "Do you remember anything from last night?"
Bits and pieces of it flashed before his mind.
An endless road with lights so bright they looked like stars. A crowd so loud it almost muted his roaring thoughts. An anger, chaotic and untamed, raging through the bones of his body —
"Fuck," he murmured. "Yeah, I'm sorry, man. It... it got too much again, and I just had to get out of there."
The girl by the sea.
Zach clicked his fingers in front of his face.
He blinked. "What?"
"You were zoning out," he said as he rolled his eyes. But his tone softened. "As much as an idiot you were ditching the club like that, drunk, I'm just glad you made it back here in one piece. But if something like that happens again, just tell me, okay? Dont' go running off alone."
