MADELINE WINSTON

i've always known my brother to be intimidating, but i just can't figure out what the hell he did to make even underclassmen so terrified of anyone that shares the same dna as him.

it's no secret i, dallas' little sister, moved here from new york city, especially since valerie shouted it out yesterday during lunch.

i can only hope the stigma of us winston's eventually dies down, and sooner than later would be best.

"hey," dean nudges my shoulder as we walk our cool-down lap for gym class.

"hey."

"how would you say your first gym class went?"

"not fun." i answer truthfully.

"what are you doing after school?"

"trying out for track."

he furrows his eyebrows as he laughs, "you're trying out for track, but didn't have fun running track right now?"

"yes, only because this, i am being forced to do. track, is something i'm choosing to do."

"interesting concept. how about after track tryouts? what are you doing then?"

"probably just homework and more fights at dinner." i shrug my shoulders as i watch my feet pad against the red track.

"well, how about if there's a fight at dinner, you come meet me at rusty's."

"you wanna take a greaser to a soc diner?"

"am i crazy or something?" he smiles, coming to a stop once we've caught up with the rest of our class.

"not the crazy i'm used to, but definitely crazy."

the smell of grass and sweat fills my nose as i make my way back into the girls locker room. i head to my locker and begin to change into the extra pair of clothes i brought for track practice.

it's clearing out in here as the girls all leave to go home. there's only a small group left from what i can hear in the row over from me.

i cinch my bag closed and shut my locker, only to be met with valerie behind it. i jump back, startled that she's only a few feet away from me with about four other girls standing behind her.

"hi, valerie, are you in my gym class too?" i ask, and immediately regret it as i hear how stupid i sound.

"no," she shakes her head with a small laugh. "the girls let me in." she motions to the girls behind her who are still dressed in their gym clothes.

"oh."

"i just wanted to talk." she takes a step towards me and her friends follow her movements. "you sitting with us at lunch is really brave. real brave for a greaser who knows that greasers don't belong with socs."
