Jeff and I

I opened my book and stared at the homework I had to do for tomorrow. My pen tapped idly against my book until I made my decision.

Reaching over to pick up the old, but still functional iPhone, I flicked it open and scrolled through my contacts. A...D...F...G...I....Found it!

I called the number for the contact and listened to the dial tone for, maybe, three seconds?

"Hey." He said, his voice gluing a large goofy smile on my face.

"Hi!" I said. "You got the homework for Health, right?"

"Health?" He paused, clearly a little confused. "Did you forget the sheet, or something?"

"Nooo..." I drew out the word innocently. "I just wanted to know if you have the answers for it?"

He chuckled. "You wanted the answers for the Health sheet...that's our unit summary...for our unit on self-identity? Jasmine, they're all questions about yourself!"

"Yeaah, I know! So what?"

He laughed again. "You want me to tell you the answers?"

"Yep!"

"Alright, alright. Question one?"

"Name."

"Jasmine Spanel."

"Age?"

"13. You realise I could just tell you the answers? I have my sheet here."

"Okay, go!"

"Appearance, strawberry blonde hair, tan-ish skin, huge brown eyes, and freckles across her nose and forehead." I rolled my eyes as he continued.

"Question 2, personality, lively and manipulative-" I laughed. "And hilarious."

I jotted them down. "Last question?"

"Notable relationships." He read. "That's your territory, Jas."

"Mother...father...Cherry...oh, and you too."

He laughed, the sound familiar to my ears. "Why is Cherry above me?"

"Cherry is the best birdie a girl could wish for! Who's a smart birdie?" I asked the red parrot perched on my curtain rails.

"Me! I am! I'm a smart birdie!" Cherry squawked. I blew her a kiss.

"Whatever." He dismissed my ranking and I heard him throw his book to the floor.

I smiled at him.

"How you doing?" I asked.

He sighed. "Good. This town is really quiet- I'm waiting for gunshots to ring out or something."

I giggled a little. "Come on, mate. Be serious with me- how are holding up?"

"I'm okay, Jasmine. Really. I mean, I can see you whenever I want now. It makes me happy knowing my oldest friend is a block or two away."

"I'm you oldest friend? What about Liu?"

He laughed. "Okay, okay! Liu places first, you can be second!"

"Yeah!" I laughed happily.

He and I chatted idly about some other random things for awhile. Eventually, I had to go, and he had to help unpack. He didn't seem to happy about that.

The Woods and Spanels- my family and his family- had been friends for decades. Since high school, I reckon. The Woods had two boys- Jeffery Woods and Liu Woods,

I doesn't take a genius to guess which one is my boyfriend of five and a half years.

Jeff and I had been together since before we knew what together meant- which sounds strange but if you've ever had that type of relationships you'll get it. Jeff told me he loved me six years ago- and I said it right back, and we agreed to get married when we were sixteen.

Eight year olds know nothing about relationships, and yet, we still made it work, holding hands and hugging until we were ten, and we had that awkward period where we realised what we were...but after two months we got right back together, cause we loved each other too much.

Jeffery had lived in Hyacin- a city an hour away from our small town of Marigo- all his life, and we'd drive out to see them almost every week. In that two months period- known as the Mid-Tween-Crisis- that had been horribly awkward.

We'd never been exclusive, however, and we'd often hung out with Liu over the years. He'd been like my brother-especially since I actually had no siblings.

And now Jeff and Liu lived just a few blocks away from us. We saw them almost everyday now, which I had zero problem with.

I put my phone down and closed my book. I'll pick this up later. Right now, my favourite person in the world was waiting for me.
