More Than Words

"We'll take good care of her until the right family comes." The lady behind the desk told Selena. She just nodded as a response. She picked Emily up and kissed her cheeks. Over and over.

Then she left.

Just left, Emily all alone.

Selena cried the whole way home. She was a terrible mother. Why would she do this, push everyone away?

Selena parked the car in the driveway of the house she never sold. She was going to sell it, but her gut told her not to, like she would need it in the future. Which she did.

The lights were still on and Selena found the ball that was still under the table where she had left it.

Selena bent down and picked it up. She squeezed it.

Then she put it down on the coffee table. Then she picked up the framed picture of her and Charlie that was still there and put it into a small bag. Then she went into the bedroom

She pulled the closet doors open. She took out her strapless white dress, the same one she had worn the day Charlie proposed, and put it on. She went into the bathroom and wiped the mascara lines off of her cheeks. She let her hair fall out of the bun it was in. She ran her fingers through her curls. Then she slipped her feet into black heels and grabbed the bag with the picture in it. She shut the front door behind her as she went out.

Selena arrived at the graveyard where Charlie was buried. She approached his grave, fighting tears. She took the picture frame out of the bag. She dropped to her knees and set the frame down on his grave, leaning up against the stone. Tears fell onto the grass as she set a few white roses next to the photo.

Selena bent down, pressed her forehead to the ground and whispered. "I still love you. More than words can ever say."

Then she got up, brushed the dirt off her knees and left.
