Rose's POV
It's crazy how fast time flies. When you're a kid, the only thing on your mind is growing up, being independent, finishing school, and then, when you finally cross the line of adulthood, all you want to do is go back to that time when you were innocent and didn't know how dark and cruel the world could be. And sometimes, in the blink of an eye, time stops and your life is turned upside down. The clock stops ticking and for a moment everything is motionless and the only thing you can hear is your breathing. That's the only thing that never stops. Until it does.
Dimitri's POV
I was brutally woken up by the piercing ringtone of my alarm. With a groan, I slammed my hand on the alarm clock to snooze it and went back to sleep. Five minutes later, though, when it rang again, I silenced it and threw back the covers. Not bothering with a shower, I dressed up very casually, sweatpants and a plain grey T-Shirt, put on some sneakers, grabbed my phone, keys and wallet and stormed out of my apartment.
This was my favorite part of the day. It was still early in the vampiric day as the sun was still shining in the sky. Most streets of the Court were empty, the only people awake being guardians on duty or young Moroi still drunk from the last party. Aside from a few birds joyfully chirping, the only thing one could hear so early at the Royal Court was the water running in the fountains, a peaceful sound that I had come to really appreciate.
Like every single day for over three weeks now, I pushed the door that lead to the gym and locked it behind me. Since Christian knew that I liked to be alone when I trained, he offered me on my birthday a key that could allow me to lock the door from inside so that no one could come in when I'd do my morning session. I was very grateful to have all that space to myself and thanked Christian every day for it.
I connected my phone to the speaker that I kept in here all the time and started doing some stretches. Halfway through the workout, the music stopped and my favorite Michael Bolton song started at the chorus, the announce of an incoming call. I leaned in and glanced at the caller ID which was a number I didn't recognize. "Belikov," I answered, flatly. Most people would pick up the phone with a simple "hello" but since I never received a call from someone who didn't know who I was, it had become a habit to confirm my identity.
"Hello?" said a female high-pitched voice. "Are you 'comrade'?"
"Who is this?" I asked on the defensive. There was only one person who called me like that and this was definitely not Rose's voice.
"I'm sorry, this must sound so strange to you. Name's Wendy. I'm a nurse at the Salem hospital. I'm calling because there's been a car accident. The girl that was hit was apparently on her way to calling you. I got your number from her phone. She's got long dark brown hair, tanned skin, still a Jane Doe. Would you happen to know who I'm talking about?"
"Yes," I said, already on my way out. "Her name is Rosemarie Hathaway. I'm on my way." Not bothering to lock the door behind me, I left the building and started running to my car. Suddenly, I felt anger rise in me. I wasn't angry at the nurse – who was very nice – and certainly not at Rose, no. I was angry at the world. The universe that made this happen.
Rose was supposed to come home tonight. She was supposed to come back from a three-week mission that both Lissa and her said was classified. I had made plans for us tonight, to celebrate her return and now the thought that there was even the slightest chance that she might not come home at all scared the hell out of me.
I got into my car and left Court as fast as I could, thanking the empty streets. The fastest route to Salem was more an eight-hour drive and I did not have all that time. So instead, I drove to the closest airport and luckily found a plane to Boston that would take off in 40 minutes. Once I was settled in my seat and there was nothing for me to do anymore, I picked up my phone and called Lissa. She picked up after a few tones. "Rose has been in an accident in Salem," I said, skipping the formalities. "I'm on a flight to Boston, I'll be there in an hour or so."
"Wait, go back. She's been in an accident? Why have I not been told this sooner?" This was one of the few times I heard her so panicked.
"I'm telling you now. Can you get a car ready for when I land?"
"Yeah, sure. I'll try to get there as soon as I can."
I thanked her and sank deeper in my seat. This was a very small plane with less than a hundred people aboard and when I was done browsing the magazines, the only thing left to do was counting seconds and praying that Rose would be okay.
Two hours later, I barged in Salem Hospital's ER and slammed my hand on the front counter. "I'm here to see Rose Hathaway, please. I need to know how she's doing."
The nurse looked up from her computer and stared at me for a few seconds, an annoyed look on her face, and then looked back down. "I can't give out information about a patient. If you want to see her, talk to the family."
"I'm her husband," I lied. The nurse looked back up and glanced at my hands. Luckily, I was wearing the ring Rose had given me for my birthday and the nurse bought my story. She typed something on her computer and told me that Rose was still in surgery. She promised to send the surgeon to update me if I waited patiently in the waiting area.
I sat down next to a pregnant lady who was biting her nails nervously. Then, I truly understood what it felt like to be in total ignorance. My love's life was in the hands of a couple of strangers and I realized that some people really had the power to control one's life. Hopefully, Rose's dhampir genes would allow the surgery to go well and be fast.
As to confirm my thoughts, a surgeon came to find me only a few minutes later and told me that everything went well and cleared me to go see her. I had to stop myself from running to her room and walk calmly.
Once I was inside, I sat down in the chair next to her bed and contemplated her face. The bruises and cuts had started to heal and I was sure that she would be out of there tomorrow. Only then, I realized how worried and tense I'd been. My Rose was safe and sound and she would live. Relieved, I leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. That simple gesture caused my heart to warm... and Rose to wake up.
"Hi," I smiled warmly. "Welcome back."
She blinked a few times and gave me a weak smile. "Hey, comrade."
Still immensely relieved that she was okay, I took her hands and kissed them. "You have no idea how glad I am that you're okay. How are you feeling?" I said right before I realized how ridiculous that question was.
"I've been better," she laughed softly. "But I'll heal quickly, don't worry."
"I'm not," I answered.
"Also," she said, sitting up, "I have something to ask you." I nodded, encouraging her to go on. "Being hit by a car is a pretty scary thing. I hope that never happens to you and you might never really know what I'm about to tell you. But there's this moment when you feel like the time is slowing down and a second ends up feeling like an hour. It's a terrible feeling." Her face suddenly grew dark as she recalled the accident. "You lose complete control of what you do and realize how precious time is. And I don't wanna waste any more time." It was her turn to take my hands in hers and stare deeply into my eyes. "We're not getting any younger, comrade, and time's flying so fast it scares me sometimes. If this accident had any good in it, it's that it made me realize I don't wanna wait any more. I love you and want to be with you forever. So here's my question. Dimitri Belikov, my comrade, my super sexy Russian battle god, will you do me the honor of being my husband?"
My eyes widened, this being the last thing I expected coming from her. I cupped her cheeks and stoked her cheekbones, a big smile on my face. "Of course, I will Roza." She smiled back and slid her hand in my hair, bringing our lips together. I smiled against her soft lips and brought her body closer to mine.
This was the beginning of a new chapter in both our lives and I knew that from now on, this promise of forever would make us even stronger to survive whatever challenge life would throw at us.
