"And by the power invested in me by absolutely no one, I pronounce you husband and wife!" I screamed while raising my glass up in the air. Lissa let out a shriek of joy and Christian gave her the widest smile. "You may now engage in a passionate kiss but wait until we've all turned around!"

The girls laughed and Lissa stuck her tongue out at me before focusing her attention on her husband. I turned away just as their lips touched. I faked a cringe, but deep inside I was tremendously happy for her. Lissa and Christian had had to wait only a couple of months after their engagement to get married but I knew they had been crazy for each other since the first time they met. It was going to be a difficult relationship given that Christian was going to go back to the front eventually but I knew they could make it through.

This wedding had been organized very last minute, literally, but we had managed to find Lissa a more formal dress than our nurse uniform and put together a little bouquet to add a traditional touch to the event. But the best part was the packs of beers that our friend Meredith found in a soldier's tent.

Being on duty tomorrow, I vowed to myself to not drink anything but I couldn't resist one beer, only one. When the celebration ended, Lissa and Christian set off to God knows where to do things I had no interest in knowing about. Most of the other girls were barely able to stand so I decided to send them off to bed while I cleaned up the mess.

I didn't mind being alone. The quietness of the evening was peaceful and I found myself enjoying the calm much more than I'd imagined I would. Tonight was a cloudless sky and the stars and moon were so bright I could make out the details of the whole camp.

After a few minutes, I heard footsteps coming towards me. Already I began thinking of an excuse that would put me in only mild trouble. Though, it was not any of my superiors that arrived. Instead, I recognized the tall figure of a certain Russian soldier. I couldn't help a smile.

"Good evening, Lieutenant Belikov," I said lightly.

His white teeth shone in the darkness as he smiled back. "Good evening, Rose." His voice was contained and calm as always. He took a few more steps before staring at me in the eyes. They were so intense that I stopped breathing for a split second. "What can I do to make you stop calling me that? You know how much I hate it."

Indeed, I knew he hated it with a passion, which was the very reason I loved doing it so much. "Hmm, I have a few things in mind," I said flirtatiously.

Dimitri didn't reply. Instead, he grabbed my hand and gently kissed it. My heart was beating so fast that I feared it might burst out of my chest.

Dimitri was still waiting to be summoned to a Russian base. Ever since he was able to get out of bed, I had spent all my breaks and days off in his company. Strangely, we never ran out of things to say and I treasured moments with him. Everything felt so easy with him. I had no idea why, but his presence always made me feel at ease. It had been impossible to deny the sexual tension that had slowly built up between us.

Dimitri let go of my hand. He took a look around and noticed the empty bottles. "A party I wasn't invited to? Scandalous," he teased.

I let out a nervous laugh. "It wasn't exactly a party." I lowered my voice. "More like an incognito wedding." He raised one eyebrow. "My friend Lissa got married to this soldier from the camp over. Let's say that our nun bosses wouldn't really approve."

"Ah, I see," he smiled. His Russian accent still made me feel unholy things. "Do you need any help cleaning up?"

I shook my head. "I'm okay, thanks. You should go back to bed and rest. You could be called back anytime from now."

His face suddenly darkened. "I'm still dreading that day," he confessed.

"What do you mean?"

His gaze was lost in the distance. He sat down on a trunk and I joined him. "You have no idea what it's like, Rose. I know that we need to do everything possible to defy the Germans, but it has turned into so much more than just defending countries and territories."

I listened silently. I had only seen the aftermath of war. The wounds, the infections, the bodies. I could only begin to imagine what it was like on the battlefield.

"There is never any mercy whatsoever. And all there is is blood and cries. And there is no room for hesitation. Your life is constantly on the line. You enrol, you kill. That's all that war is about. There is no humanity. Only destruction."

"Dimitri..." My voice broke. I didn't know what to say. He seemed so lost.

"That's why I don't want to leave, Rose. Of course, it is my duty and the day they call me back, I will go with no hesitation. But leaving here, you, will break my heart." I held my breath. "When I'm out on the field, all I feel is despair." He turned to face me and took my hands in his. "But when I'm with you, Rose, there are so many things that go through my soul, I can't even begin to describe them. Unfortunately, I have a feeling I will have to leave very soon. These last couple of months in your company have been magical and I just thought you should know how I feel, even if it isn't mutual."

That was it. My heart was definitely going to explode. I couldn't move. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't say a word. All I wanted to do was confess my feelings too but my larynx refused to work. As words were failing me, I counted to three and grabbed Dimitri's collar. Our lips touched and my world blossomed. He was clearly taken aback but responded quickly and kissed me back.

I felt a passion ignite in me, one that I could feel burn in him too, and we pressed our bodies together. I slid my hand in his long soft hair and climbed on his lap. His hands were exploring my body, craving for more. I pushed myself against him, making it clear that I wanted more too.

Who knew how much time together we would have. I had never felt so passionately about someone before and I was not ready to lose him so soon.

"Dimitri?," I whispered between two kisses.

"Yes, Roza?" His breath was heavy against my mouth.

"Take me to your tent."
