"How do I look?" said Lissa, spinning around, a big smile on her face.
"Good, you look good," I said with a yawn.
"Rose! Please, be serious," she retorted, giving me a knowing look.
I sighed. Lissa had called me four hours before my alarm, meaning I only got to sleep three hours last night. She'd pretended an emergency when in truth, all she wanted was me to tell her how to dress today. I couldn't blame her, though. I was exited about today as well.
Christian had been gone for three months and along with him had Dimitri disappeared. Today they were coming back from a long trip to the eastern states. I knew that Lissa had video called Christian a few times but I had only been able to get ahold of Dimitri through one phone call; he was too busy with his guardian duties.
I took another look at Lissa and smiled. She had cut her blond hair recently and it was now falling slightly below the shoulders. I really liked this new look fit for a queen, it made her look wiser and older. Now, she had to wear extravagant outfits everyday and had pounds of makeup on her face but today, she had simply taken a day off queen duties and wore a simple dress like she used to when we were at the academy. She had put on a single layer of mascara. Even though Clara, Lissa's personal makeup artist, was really talented, I thought Lissa looked more beautiful with little to no makeup.
"You look wonderful," I said finally. "Christian will be very happy to see you with... normal clothing."
Lissa stuck out her tongue at me and I laughed. I missed these moments between us. She always was so busy, we didn't really spend time together anymore. I was happy that she was Queen and that she held the power to make our world better but sometimes I selfishly wished that she was just a Royal like every other and that I was her only guardian and that we would live crazy adventures together.
Her phone chimed and she looked down. She rose. "They're here! They landed!" She jumped off her bed and grabbed my hand. "Let's go!" She pulled me toward the door and we ran out of the building together.
Lissa seemed to want to keep on running but I pulled her back. "Hum, are you planning to run to the runway?" I laughed, raising my eyebrows. "It'll take you like twenty minutes and they'll be gone by then, but be my guest."
"Oh," she said flatly, her shoulders dropping and the excitement on her face fell. "Maybe we should just wait for them here, then."
"Nah, let's take the car. Just call Christian and tell him we're coming to get them."
Lissa agreed and four minutes later, we pulled over next to the plane. Lissa got out of the car before I could even stop it and ran into Christian's arms who was standing next to three suitcases. The smile on his face when he held her made me suddenly very happy. They had complete opposite personalties but were so perfect for each other. As Queen, Lissa wasn't really allowed to show her emotions very often and had to keep a straight face most of the time. With Christian, she could express herself freely and confide in him what she didn't tell me. Don't get me wrong, Lissa and I would never hide things from each other, but there are things that you'd rather tell your loved one.
Speaking of, I got out of the car and scanned the runway for Dimitri. Seeing him nowhere, I headed towards the lovebirds. Christian smiled when he saw me. I smiled back and hugged him. "Wow, I never thought I'd say this one day, Rosie," he started, "but I actually missed you."
"Missed you too, Sparky," I laughed. "Hey, where's Dimitri by the way?"
"He's still inside the plane," he said, nodding towards the private jet. "You can go, you know," he added when he noticed I wasn't moving. "There's no one here that's gonna attack us. The odds of an assassin hiding in the trunk of the car aren't very high."
I rolled my eyes but headed towards the stairs anyway. Inside the cabin, I spotted Dimitri who was talking with a crew member. His back was to me but his stature and hair were unique and I could've recognized him anywhere. An idea popped into my head, and I headed towards him as softly as I could, on the tip of my toes. Dimitri was an excellent guardian and had impeccable hearing, if I was walking too loudly he would turn around. I successfully managed to walk incognito and I put both my hands on his eyes like in movies. I pressed my lips together to repress a laugh that would immediately give me away.
The crew member Dimitri was talking to smiled, taking a good guess at who I was and left to give us some privacy. Dimitri put his hands over mine and laughed. "Seriously, Roza, did you think this would actually work and I wouldn't know this was you?" God, how I'd missed his accent.
I laughed. "Dammit!" Dimitri grabbed my hands and turned around, lacing our fingers together. There was a huge smile on his face and I smiled back. "I missed you so much." He leaned in and pressed his lips against mine. Kissing Dimitri was my favorite thing in the world but there was something different today, something not as pleasant as usual, not pleasant at all. I pulled away and studied his face. Then; I realized what had changed and my eyes grew wide. "What is that?"
He frowned. "What?"
"That hair on your face!"
He laughed. "There's a name for it, you know. It's called a beard."
I crossed my arms. "Well, well. You leave me for three months and this is what happens."
"Come on! It's not that bad!" Dimitri laughed again. I wasn't sure if what was pissed me off the most was the actual beard or the amused look on his face.
"Dimitri Belikov, wipe the smirk off your face! This is a serious discussion!" I crossed my arms and tried to manage a serious face. I obviously failed.
He laughed and kissed me again. "You know I love you, right?"
I ignored him. "I'm not kissing you again until you shave."
He cringed. "That's a bit harsh." I rolled my eyes and grabbed his hand, pulling him out of the plane. He didn't give up. "Come on, Rose. I like it."
"Well, I don't and as far as I'm concerned, you're not the one kissing a mouth hidden under layers of hair."
He laughed again. "Don't you think you're exaggerating a little too much? Besides, I look badass."
I looked at him again. He wasn't taking this seriously at all. "You don't need a beard to look badass. We go home and you shave, period."
"Fine."
"Thank you." I was heading towards the car, where I could see Lissa and Christian making up in the back seat, but Dimitri pulled me back.
"I missed you," he said, locking his eyes with mine.
Dammit. His charms were too efficient on me. I dropped the pissed off act. "I missed you too." I slid my hand in his hair and brought his face to mine. I kissed him passionately, ignoring the way it itched. When he pulled away, he was clearly proud of himself.
"I thought you weren't kissing me until I shaved."
"Just get in the car," I said, hiding a smile.
Dimitri laughed and we got in the car. And just like that everything was right in the world again. With Dimitri and Christian around, Lissa and I were feeling better. These people were my favorite in the world and as I was driving through the streets of the Court, I smiled, thinking that even if we don't get to chose our parents, we can decide who our family really is.
