It was midday in the maze. Jean had arrived in what the bustling group of boys had called 'The Box'. The metallic, oily smell of the cramped and dark container still engulfed her senses. She sat in the shade of a giant tree, watching the Gladers work.

Her mind was almost blank. No memories except her name.

My name is Jean.

That was all. She didn't remember her family. No recollection of friends. Or pets. A general sense of how the world works was the only resource she had.

I'm scared. Where am I?

The boy, Alby, had earlier welcomed her to the 'Glade'. He apparently was the leader of the group of fifty or so boys. All no older than 18.

The Glade was a big field that seemed to be divided into four sections. One was filled with crops. The second with a barn and pens holding animals. The third was a run-down looking shack. Maybe two floors. The fourth was a thick forest. Though the sun smiled down the whole glade, yet this specific sjections seemed to keep a grim aura. The thing that caught her attention the most was the mammoth walls that guarded the perimeter of the Glade.

Was being so extreme necessary?
I wonder what's out there? Seems like nothing but vines and moss.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a scoff. A tall boy with messy hair and a nasty smirk on his face laughed.

"Um... Hi-"

"So you're the new Greenbean?", He sneered, "Since when did the Creators start letting girls in?"

He inspected her with an evil, critical eye. A tiny gang of boys behind him. Jean tried to shrink as much as she could, his glare burning holes into her skin.

"Uh Gally, I think you're scaring the dame." A boy chimed in.

"Shut it, shuckface! Now look greenie, just 'cause you're a girl don't mean we'll go easy on you. On your feet. Now!"

Jean quickly shot up at his command. Her heart beating against her ribcage. She tried to speak but not a sound escaped her lips.

"Be an idiot and you'll die just like the poor shanks buried in the woods. Heh, I bet you won't even last a day."His laughter rang through the fields but she was still frozen in terror.

People die here?

In a quick attempt to escape Gally, Jean ran towards the east wall entrance. The pain in her chest worsening by the minute. She had made it into a corridor and continued to run.

After running for a long amount of time, exhaustion gave up on her. She sat against the rock wall and caught her breath.

Moments passed, when a faint noise echoed through the corridors. It was haunting like a ghost's wails. It rang again, only louder.

And louder. And louder.

The sounds of mechanics mixed in. The whirling of gears spinning. Soon a light could be seen.

What she saw was unbelievable.

It had the body of what seemed to be a slug. Menacing metal spikes poked from every inch of its body. Pinchers and saws was the creature's arms. They'd retract from time to time.

The horrid creature was charging forward. Straight for her.
