The next morning, I woke up to the smell of breakfast being made. I left my room and closed the door behind me. When I saw the guest bedroom, I remembered Daniel was here.
I knocked on the door. I got no response. I opened it and peeked inside. Daniel was still out.
I threw the nearest pillow and chucked it at him. "Hey, come get some breakfast." He groaned. I walked to his bedside and kissed him. "Come on."
He smiled. "If you put it like that." He grabbed my waist and pulled me next to him.
He rubbed his thumb along my cheek. "Look, Hayley. Are you sure this is a good idea? Us? We both know that when we go back to the Greenhouse, at some point we're gonna be at each other's throats. I don't want that to happen."
"You're right. But, that doesn't stop me from wanting to be with you now. Whatever we go through at school, it's worth it because of this moment, right here."
"That's true." He smiled and kissed me lightly. "Should we go eat? Or, we could stay up here all day."
I pushed on his shoulder. "Come on. Let's go." I stood up, grabbed his hand, and pulled him downstairs.
All of my family were already seated at the table. I unclasped Daniel's hand and went and kissed my mom on the head. "Hope you don't mind, but Daniel took the guest bedroom last night. I didn't want him driving back that late."
Daniel gave a weak smile. "Of course not." My mom said. "Come. Sit down. We have plenty of food. You're always welcome to join us."
"Thanks, Mrs. Woods. Sorry to interrupt your first day home."
"Call me Ryan. And don't you worry about that. I wouldn't even be home if it weren't for you. Thank you. For saving us."
"It's what anyone would have done. It was nothing."
"Either way, Daniel, I'm still grateful." He smiled sheepishly. He and Leo had saved us from a ticking bomb.
I grabbed his hand and looked at him. "Me too." He turned his head towards me and stared. He smiled at me.
"I'm just glad I was there in time. If something had happened..." He rubbed the back of my hand with his thumb.
Breakfast went well, except for a few typical questions from my dad for Daniel. He went fairly easy on him, though. I could tell my dad liked him.
After breakfast, I walked with Daniel back to his car. "Thank you." He said. "I needed that." I nodded and wrapped my arms around him. I knew he was talking about his mom. She had been arrested the day before.
"See you at the Greenhouse?" I asked.
"I'll be waiting." I stood on my toes and kissed him. "Bye, Hayley."
"Bye." I turned towards the house and walked inside before I could tell him to stay.
