The moonlight dance.
The hall had been completely rearranged. The marked wooden floorboards were now spotless, the yellow lightened room was now a mysterious dark with odd spotlights dotted on the dance floor, and the soft murmur of voices that usually occurred in the room was overpowered by the bass of a new pop song.
I stepped through the double-doors and started searching the crowd for anyone I recognised. My dress was too tight and very uncomfortable, I don't know why I told Molly I was going as a nurse, this outfit was ridiculously revealing and made me feel like I should be working the corner not going to a party.
After standing awkwardly on my own for nearly a minute, I pushed my way through the crowd of costumed girls and guys rubbing against each other in a way that should be made illegal. There were girls here in less clothes than me, and that was practically naked.
I found the punch bowl and grabbed a plastic red cup from a stack, hoping it was the 'not used' stack. Before I could even taste my drink, Robin had come up from behind me and snatched it out of my hand.
"You do not wanna drink that, trust me." He explained, pouring the punch back into the bowl.
"What? Why?"
"It's the punch bowl, Ali." He said as if I should understand what he was meaning. "Oh
God. At parties like this.." He gestured around the room." ...don't ever drink from the punch bowl, or anything that you didn't see be opened."
"Why?"
"Guys at this school like to get laid and will do anything to have that happen. Even if that means slipping drugs into a girls drink, or the punch bowl." Now I understood.
"Oh, okay. No punch...ever." I said as I saluted him.
Robin grabbed my hand and pulled me onto the dance floor.
"No way! I'm not dancing." I screeched, trying to release his grip on my hand.
"Yes, you are." He added simply.
"No, I don't dance."
"You do now." He shouted over the intro of the next song. Before I could protest anymore, Robin twirled me around and I was lost in dancing and giggling with my newly found best friend.
Half way through the third song, we were interrupted.
"Mind if I cut in?" Asked Alex, not even looking at Robin once, just me. I gave a nod so small, I wasn't even sure if he noticed. But Robin backed away and Alex slid right into his place. One hand holding mine and the other on my waist, however, Alex's hand seemed to travel lower than Robin's.
"So, you enjoying the crappy dance?" Alex asked, a huge smile cracking on his lips.
"It's been fun, I guess."
"Well, you better get used to it." He winked." They have these a lot."
"Oh God." I groaned, letting my head fall onto his shoulder as Alex chuckled lightly again.
"Did I tell you, you look gorgeous tonight?"
"Actually, you didn't."
"Well, Ali. You look gorgeous tonight." Alex laughed.
"Thanks, you don't look too bad either." I blushed.
Alex and I danced for a while, until I decided my feet ached and I was extremely tired. Alex walked me back to my dorm, dodging drunken students on the stairs and corridors.
"Well, I guess I'll see you soon then." I whispered quietly, as we stood outside of my dorm.
"How soon?" Alex questioned, grinning as usual.
"Eager, are we?" I asked cheekily. Alex looked at the floor and blushed.
"I was..um...hoping you would..come to dinner with me?" He spoke, barely above a whisper, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Me? Dinner?"
"Yeah, you know. It doesn't have to be a date or anything." He added quickly, covering his nervousness.
"Sure, I'd love to."
"Good. How about tomorrow? 6:30?"
"Sure, that would be great."
"Okay, well. I better go." He leaned in and quickly pecked my cheek. "Bye." He bellowed walking down the hall. I stood there completely shocked. I reached up and touched my cheek where he had just kissed it. Wow.
