Daniel

'Hey, Dorkus!' a voice rang from across the hallway. I sighed and closed my locker, the ever-so-pleasant sounds of high school drumming in my ears.

Stay loose, Daniel. I adjusted the waistband of my pants. Nobody needs to see Avengers underwear today.

I realize my situation is completely clichéd: A jock picking on a geek without provocation, blah blah blah. It's a long story involving a packed cafeteria, a klutz with a tray and an unlucky jock.

Anyway, the jock in question went by the ridiculously cool name of Jason Severide and was now walking, no, strutting towards me with a football in his hand.

I'm not even joking, this boy is like clockwork. Wedgies on Wednesdays, football on Thursdays, freestyle on Fridays because you gotta keep it fresh.

I'd be stuffed in a locker and I'd think, 'Right. Today's Tuesday.'

Suddenly, Jason's football left his hand and headed straight for me at terminal velocity.

Um, rude.

I barely had time to register it before I tripped over nothing and fell back, cleverly escaping being brained by sports equipment.

The tile floor lovingly embraced my tailbone and I turned to all fours.

Around me, kids were showing their support by pretending not to notice. I think I saw a teacher walk in, spin on his heel and walk back out.

My, I am overwhelmed by the love.

And apparently, Jason wasn't done with me yet. He grabbed the collar of my Doctor Who t-shirt and yanked me to my feet.

Now, I'm not proud of what happened next but to be fair, years of unreciprocated bullying can make even the meek want to slap a b-word.

That sounds like the happy ending of a typical teen movie.

I swung my fist at the boulder he calls he face and since I'm not in a movie, I was closer to hitting Italy than anything.

Well, at least I tried.

Now it was Jason's turn. I sucked in a deep breath as he drew his arm back and just..screamed.

A proper damsel-in-distress scream. Kids dropped their phones, jocks dropped geeks.

I scrambled to my feet, half running, half crawling through the double doors. I didn't look back. Just kept running.
