I met her on a rainy day in July.
It all started when my car broke down in front of a small bakery just outside of Sydney. Not caring about the mid-afternoon rain, I climbed out and slid on my sunglasses to hide my eyes and hopefully my identity.
I could've stayed in my car and called Michael. I could've stayed in my car and called Calum. I could've stayed in my car and called Luke.
But I didn't.
I got out of my car and started for the bakery. I thought maybe after a bagel or something, I could figure out what to do.
What started as a light drizzle, quickly turned into torrential downpour. I stopped on the sidewalk, held out my arms and looked up at the sky. I didn't care at that moment, I just wanted to do it. I kind of felt like a kid again. Although, I probably looked like an idiot, smiling and looking up at the rain. It smeared my glasses and it pelted my face. Each drop felt like a cold sting, but I loved it.
I could've walked straight into the bakery. I could've looked straight out in front of me. I could've done anything other than what I was doing.
But I wasn't.
Then another wet body ran into me from behind.
"Oh.. I'm so sorry" a shaky female voice began.
"I should've been watching where I was going"
So I turned around to look at the girl.
Her black hair was wet and stringy in front of her face. Her gray hoodie was soaked and clung to her tightly showing off the curves of her torso. Her skinny jeans had clearly shown mud up to her knees. Her once white shoes, were also brown with mud. Her breath was fast as if she had been running for a while now.
Both of her hands ran to head, tucking the loose hair behind her ears. It didn't stay well and quickly poked back out, but she didn't bother to try again.
What got me though, was that her mascara was bleeding down her face. I couldn't tell if it was from the rain or her own tears.
My question was answered as she shook, and hiccuped as a wave of tears began.
So I hugged her, and she didn't reject it. Instead, she cried into my chest, and I let her. I wanted her to, because I felt deep down that that's what she needed right then; someone's shoulder to cry on.
Suddenly I felt like a prince and she was the damsel in distress.
After what felt like forever, she looked up at me with her dark hollow brown eyes.
"I'm really sorry... my mum just died.... and then.... then my dog ran away..." she whimpered, pulling away from me. That's when I realized, she didn't recognize me. She had no idea I was Ashton Irwin. She had no idea I was in a globally famous band. So I decided to leave it that way.
"I've had an awful day.. I'm sorry to bother you" her voice shook.
"What? Not at all! Oh my God! I'm so sorry! Is there anything I can do to help?" I stumbled across words like an idiot. I couldn't believe what was unfolding in front of me.
"No. I've bugged you enough. I just really have to go find my dog" she said.
"Please, let me help you" I begged, finally figuring out what to say. I didn't know why, but I just had to help. Calum had always said I was too nice.
