I look at the time as I hit snooze on my alarm clock. 8:17. Today is the big day. I'm moving to LA with Paulina. I'm starting college tomorrow, and I'm leaving this house. I'm leaving my sister, my dad, my fucked up mom... and all the screwed up memories here too.
I sit up, walk over to the bathroom and grab a rubber band throwing it up into a messy pony tail. I decide not to shower since I showered last night. I walk back into my room and throw on a plain blue t-shirt some shorts and my Converse before I walk downstairs to eat breakfast. As soon as I sit down to eat my frosted flakes I hear my dad walking downstairs. He's in his robe, reading the newspaper when he comes over to kiss me on the cheek. "Morning my Sweets" he's says as he turns the stove on, boiling water for his coffee.
"Hey dad" I mumble, walking to the other side of the counter to sit down at the bar.
"So, today's the big day huh? Where my little girl leaves home" he says sarcasticly.
I roll my eyes. "Dad, I hope you dont think Im leaving just because of mom. I mean yeah that's part of the reason, but Im 19 now, and high school's over. Its time I go to school, get a job, start my own life... start over", I say looking down.
"I know sweetie, I guess Im just having a hard time, knowing my baby is leaving the nest."
We're interrupted by the squeaky whistle of steam blowing from the coffee pot on the stove, announcing the water is done boiling.
My dad grabs a mug from the cabinet above his head. "Go ask your sister if she wants some coffee please"
I sigh. "Jessie do you want some coffee", I yell... hoping she can hear me upstairs.
"Kaylee, if I wanted yelling, I would've called her myself. Your gonna wake you mother up, and that wont be good because she took a lot more pain killers yesterday than she usually does which means she'll be biting our heads off. So please, get up and walk upstairs to ask your sister", he says in a huff.
I clench my jaw before getting up and making my way towards the stair case. I have no idea where my mom went. I remember when my mom used to sing me bedtime songs, and make chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast. But that persons gone. That was before the drugs, now all she does is take drugs and smoke all sorts of sick shit all day, while we bust our ass' trying to keep up with everything, and make sure she's okay, just so she can treat us like crap.
Just as I get to the top of the stair case to get my sister, my mother comes out of the room, mumbling under her breath. She looks up and stares at me. I rarely talk to her anymore, and its unusual if I even run into her 1 a month. Other than when shes yelling from her room and fighting with us. But this is the closest I've been to her in at least 6 if not more years, and I just stare. Her ratty old hair looks like it hasn't been brushed in ages, her teeth are yellowing, and her eyes are bloodshot and smudged with eyeliner. I can see wrinkles and marks from who know what drug all over her face and arms. She comes out in a torn up, holey old brown t-shirt , with some grey sweatpants, and white socks. She looks as if she should be out on the street begging for food.
"What the hell are you looking at missy", she slurs.
I just stare at her blankly, wondering what happened to my mom that I love dearly.
"Do you hear me!?" she points at me. "And why the fuck are all these boxes scattered around my house, I want this shit cleaned up".
"Mom, they are my boxes. I'm leaving remember... I'm going away for college. So its all my stuff", I answer.
She laughs. "Your going to college? Horse shit, fuck no you ain't going to college, you ain't going anywhere. Your staying here in this house to help out... you ungrateful bitch".
