----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There she saw him.
He was surrounded by a ton of other girls as usual. He was laughing about something, just the way he smiled made her heart melt. Even though the smile was never directed at her. Amanda opened up her locker, casually spying on him, just a few lockers down from her.
He had nice tan skin with dark black hair. He was the quarterback on the football team. Naturally the girls loved him.
Amanda was just another one of those girls. Except unlike some of these other girls, she knew she didn't have a chance with him at all.
He caught her staring, and Amanda blushed quickly looking through her locker so he couldn't see her face. He strode towards her, the gaggle of girls still following him. “I'm Jeremy.” He said.
Amanda looked up, her heart stuck in her throat. Why was he talking to her? “I know.” She answered quickly, then immediately felt stupid. He had no idea who she was, yet she did. She probably looked like some sort of stalker. But then again everyone knew who he was.
The other girls laughed. A pretty brunette who was holding onto his arm spoke up. “Why are you talking to Big Mac?” She giggled.
Amanda felt her cheeks grow hot. This was so embarrassing. “I got to go to class.” She mumbled her eyes cast down on the floor.
“See you in calculus!” Jeremy called after her.
Amanda couldn't help but feel a little excited that he knew she was in his class. It was stupid she knew that. But at least he noticed. There was still that nagging feeling that crept inside, wondering why he was all the sudden talking to her now. She had seen him around all year, last year too. So why would he talk to her now?
“Good job Amanda,” Mr. Lucas said handing her the calculus test. “Another hundred, good job. I have no idea how you do it Amanda.”
Amanda took the test feeling a sense of pride. Calculus was easy to her, and it came naturally and she was the best in class. Jeremy turned around and gave Amanda a smile. “Good job on the test Amanda.” He said. “I probably failed.” He gave a little laugh.
Amanda gave him a small smile, feeling elated that he was talking to her. “I'm sure you did fine.” She said.
Mr. Lucas passed Jeremy his test. “Mr. Rivers, I’m afraid I need to see you after class.” He said shaking his head.
“Hey Amanda,” Jeremy whispered as Mr. Lucas was passing out the other tests. “Can you wait for me outside of class? I need to talk to Mr. Lucas real quick, just wait for me outside the door. OK?”
Amanda's mouth dropped. Why did he want her to wait for him? “Umm..”
“Thanks.” He smiled real wide. “Really appreciate it Amanda.”
“Why do you want me to wait for you?” She tried asking him, but he was already in some conversation with someone else. The only thing that rang in her head the whole period was the Jeremy Rivers wanted to talk to her! Why?
Amanda couldn't help but feel really nervous as she waited for him outside of class. Was this some sort of cruel joke? No one ever really bothered talking to her, especially not one of the hottest guys in her grade.
Jeremy got out of class with an annoyed expression on his face, almost walking past Amanda, when he saw her he gave her a small smile. “Thanks for waiting.” He said.
Amanda nodded, her throat too clogged up to speak.
“I need your help with something.” He said looking around at the hallways, not bothering to look at her. “I'm failing calculus and I need your help.”
She should of known it would have been something like this. “I'm sorry..I don't-”
Jeremy looked at her with such a sad expression. “Please Amanda. I’m asking you because I like you. I don't want anyone else to help me but you.”
It didn't seem like it when all he called her was Big Mac until now. She didn't say that however. The thought of helping Jeremy at all was elating, and maybe he would be nicer to her. Maybe she could make friends with the girls he constantly talked to. “I guess so.” She answered. “When do you want me to start?”
Jeremy took out his phone. “Whats your number? I’ll just text you.”
She couldn't help it though, the rest of the day she was all dreamy about Jeremy, replaying the conversations over and over in her head. She had his number!
He ignored her for the rest of the day, it didn't bother Amanda though, she didn't expect any different.
“Hey Zenas.” Amanda greeted the Asian kid at her table as she sat down with her tray of food. She got a salad this time, she got the feeling that Jeremy didn't particularly like fat girls too much.
“Hey.” He said pushing up his glasses, burying his nose in his book. It was another thick book, not Eragon.
“Wow you read fast.” Amanda remarked. “Your already done with Eragon?”
Zenas nodded. “It's not that hard of a read.” He took a big bite of his apple. “You want to borrow it?”
Amanda shrugged. “I guess so.” It looked interesting enough. She was tired of reading about the pretty girls anyways, reading books about dragons would be a nice change.
He put his book down and reached in his large backpack. “Here.” He said. “I need it back though.”
“Thank you.” Amanda smiled opening up the book and she started to read, the cafeteria's loud voices gradually dimmed down as she was sucked in the book.
Something slimy ran down her back, and she jumped setting her book down. What was that? She turned her head looking at the nearby tables, maybe some kid threw something at her. A grape hit her face.
It stung where it hit, and she put a chubby hand to her face. She looked over at Zenas, he obviously didn't notice anything, his head was still buried in his book.
Another grape hit her in the forehead, and she could hear laughter. “Why didn't you eat the grapes Big Mac?” One of the pimply boys asked from the nearby table.
She put her head down, hoping to ignore them. When they threw a cracker at her, crumbs getting in her hair. “Can you guys please stop?” She asked, tears threatening to spill. No she wouldn't cry, not here.
“Shamu asked you to stop.” Another boy cooed, the guys all laughing hysterically. They threw another cracker at her.
That was it. She got up, grabbed her book and went into the bathroom, where she stayed for the rest of the period.
