74~ When Trust Breaks

The bon-fire burned fiercely and Kavita stood few distance away from it. She held an open diary in her hand. She kept tearing few pages and throwing them into the fire, the flames grew stronger. She stared at it with dry, emotionless eyes.

'Your romance hero is so perfect.'

'He is inspired by you.'

'I am not perfect.'

'For me you are.'

.....

'I was never coming back.'

'I had many affairs behind your back.'

'I was cheating on you.'

Kavita realized the pages were over. She dropped the diary on the ground and then began throwing photographs of Kabir and her into the fire. After that got over, she picked up a red and golden Kanchivaram saree, she gathered it in a bundle and threw it into the fire. Next, she took gajra, her Mangalsutra and a box of sindoor. She looked sadly at it. Then, she looked back at the fire. She inhaled sharply and dropped them into the fire. Watching them burn, she felt fresh tears prick her eyes. She recollected the day when she and Kabir had taken rounds around the fire, promising to always be there for each other. They promised to love, respect and be loyal. Their bond was to be for seven lives. Kavita felt her heart churn with agony as she realized that none of that had mattered to him. He didn't follow any of them.

She moved her hand and looked down, there was a simple silver on her ring finger. This he had gifted her on their wedding night. She recollected him promising a fairy tale life for her before making her wear it and then making love to her. That night was the best night of her life, as she was finally one with her husband. No boundaries, no secrets.

Kavita pulled out the ring and was about toss it into the fire but her hand stopped mid-way. She couldn't harden her heart to throw it. She retracted her hand and held it close to her heart.

'I wish you never confessed, Kabir. I loved you so much, then why did you cheat on me?' She spoke looking at the fire. Then, she crumpled on the ground and watched the flames burn.

After few hours, Kavita didn't realize as she had lost track of time. Slowly, she gathered herself and stood up. The flames had almost doused. She wiped her tears with her palms and turned around. With all the crying and tension, she felt head heavy. She walked into the house and slowly climbed the stairs. She was startled on seeing her father coming out of her room. He walked up to her and she lowered her head.

'Beta.' - He placed his palm on her shoulder but Kavita doesn't look up, - 'I don't know if this is the right time to talk to you about this, but-- I think you should take over Kabir's business.' He said and Kavita looked up. Her father nodded, smiling little. Kavita looked away.

'Beta, it will help you focus on your life and move on.' He said sadly. Kavita nodded and sighed, then she looked at her father.

'I will think about it, Papa. But right now, please leave me alone.' She said simply and without waiting for his response, she walked away. Her father turned around and sadly watched her go inside the room.

Kavita entered her room and looked at Naren. He was fast asleep on the bed. She walked up to him and sat beside him. She leaned closer. She felt her heart sink as she looked at her son's dried tear stains. She smiled sadly and caressed his forehead, lovingly. And kissed his forehead. After some time, she leaned and placed her head on his chest. She smiled feeling his heartbeat. A moment later, she leaned back. She turned her head and picked up a photo frame. It had a photo of Kabir smiling at the camera with a Businessman of the year award in his hand. Slowly, Kavita moved her hand and caressed his photo.

Unable to control herself she pressed the photo frame against her chest and closed her eyes. Tears rolled down her cheeks and she pressed her free palm against her mouth to muffle her cries.

Poor Kavita, she is so shaken by her husband's death and more so by his confession *Heartbreak* She is very hurt, but also she can't stop loving him. She will need time to come out of this shock. Feeling bad for her and also Naren...
